    Hi,
First of all I would like to thanks sebus for all his guidance..

I am trying to install HP mediastorage server on Vmware from Ex470/Ex475 Recovery CD,i.e..."HPMSS_RecoveryCD.iso"..This is what i have done so far..

*I created a 100GB virtulal machine with 100GB ide Hard disk for Mediasmart server..
*I use Windows 7pe cd to boot from that Vm and started "WHS_RECOVERY_SERVER.EXE" which is on a USB drive. It gets executed and starts listening..The virtual hard disk is not partitioned and the firewall is also disabled on the Windows 7 PE..
*I inserted the mounted the iso on another Windows 7 virtual machine..The firewall is also disabled on this VM..And then i execute the "WHSRECOVERY.EXE" from the CD.
*The Recovery procedure starts and find the server and starts progressing..
    * I also noticed that the progress on the server VM jumps from 15%-30%,then from 35%-50% and then directly to 100%..
*A "SYS" partition of 20GB is created on the Server VM,and i format the rest of the hard disk with NTFS as primary partition..
*After restarting the Server machine it starts the Recovery procedure and finally i get on to the Server desktop..

Now my question is whether the steps i have taken is correct or i am missing something..
The server console does not start and gives an error that the windows home storage manager service is not started..One more thing is that the desktop looks just like a normal WHS desktop...So Please guide me ,if i am doing anything wrong..I have installed all the drivers and even installed VMware tools and i am able to connect to internet..I have also activated it successfully with VLK and OEMBios Changer...

I know ,downloading the sebus snapshot image and installing mediasmart server with that is going to be much more easier..But the problem is that those links are rapidshare links, and downloading such big files from rapidshare froma a free account is just not possible for me as it gets disconnected very frequently and moreover because of the long waiting time between the downloads...So if anyone could provide me with mediafire links or any torrents,It would be just great..

Sorry, but I am not WHS guru (I do not even use it myself & never did). I only like tweaking with installs...
From all the posts this hardware is not the best (you really get what you pay for)

I would use hardware RAID card (at least for test) and see how it goes

Yes, just restore & reboot, let it build (you might have to add a driver or two)
Then from client with connector do all the required config

    Hi Sebus,
Thanks you so much...I got my install on Vmware working perfectly now...The key was that i had to install Home Server Connector Software From the Recovery Disk on the client PC and that started configuring the Home Server and completed the Restore process...It also created a primary partition on the remaining free space on the Mediasmart Server VM automatically...So i guess everything is fine now and i won't require the Snapshot image..

I have also got hold of the V3 Upgrade DVD and my next experiment would be to install it on the server...

Is the image that you have uploaded just a copy of the server after the V3 Upgrade has been performed but before restarting of the server?...Anyway,Just tell me should i also download that image now as everything seems to be working fine now?...

v3 is restored FULL image - not Upgrade (so no need for the WHS_RECOVERY_SERVER.EXE & WHSRECOVERY.EXE mess), ofcourse captured before reboot

Sucessfully upgraded the HP mediasmart server to v3 on VMware using the v3 upgrade DVD...Everything is working smooothly, even though i had to activate the server again...

    @sebus
Can we use the upgrade DVD For factory reset?..OR we need a seperate v3 Restore DVD...IS the ESX480 Restore DVD available on net, V3 OR Is it just like the ESX470 Restor DVD?...Thanks again for all the guidance..

Yes, v3 snapshot image was created with Ex470/475 (Mediasmart EX47X Update 3 Eng - Server Recovery Disk
(all that is explained in post #27)

OK...That would save me from downloading the snapshot image...Have you found Ex490/495 recovery disk anywhere?...I didn't find them anywhere...

    EX47x had Athlon processor
    EX48x had Intel Celeron processor

Which means that either one could be restored in VMWare if the host CPU was the same (otherwise offiline sysprep/adjustments would be required accordingly)

Nicely expanded instructions (mine were just minimalistic in post #27)
