    Problem with the connector

    Hi everyone!
I'm trying to install HPMSS in Vmware. I have a problem with the home server connector. I did this before:

    1. Deleted all partitions
    2. Used Hirens10 as a boot disk, but added the snapshot images to it
    3. Ran snapshot using :
    * snapshot restore partitionstructure c:\hpmss_ex.sna
    * snapshot restore HD1 auto c:\hpmss_ex.sna
    4. Let the restore finish, then booted to the hdd
    5. it booted and did all the server install and whs install
    6. it finally came to rest on the Administrators Desktop
    7. so i only installed the Vmware tools for Win2003
    8. Connected to the server using a copy of the whsconnector from the whs software shared folder

In this point, the home server connector tells me "Windows Home server initialization failed". Can anyone tell me what's the problem???

    Thank you!

PD: sorry for my poor english :(

    2. Used Hirens10 as a boot disk, but added the snapshot images to it
    3. Ran snapshot using :

    4. Let the restore finish, then booted to the hdd

Easy, you did NOt leave space for the required second partition.
First MUST be exactly as image 20.x Gb, second whatever is left

You can run snaphot in GRAPHICAL mode!

I had to do it twice, as had the same problem, second time I created partition in the empty space BEFORE rebooting from WinPE environment (better than Hirem's WinXP)

    Basically try again

    Hi again:

I still having the same problem with the connector. These are my steps before the error:

+ With snapshot I restored the 20GB partition with the sysprepared image. With partition magic I create another partition (without format) of 20GB (primary partition type)
+ I rebooted the Virtual Machine and started from HD, and after a while, I was into the Home Server Desktop. I installed the VMWare tools for 2003 and then rebooted.
+ I was in A Windows Vista PC and using the PC Connector Software from the MSS shared software directory. I installed all and when I was in the setup of the server, It finded it but when It was going to start I got "Windows Home Server initialization failed".

I have a Windows Vista in Spanish. Can anyone help me??

    Thank you

Try again? I had to do it twice before it worked

If you Google this message you will see lots of people having problems (even with real WHS) and no real solution to it, but try again only

OK, before reboot create partition & format it NTFS, but for God sake NOT with Partition Magic?!
Use Acronis from Hirems 10 disk

And also disconnect CD drive (so there are ONLY 2 partitions) when the machine is build & configured from the connector

    Quick Question

When you say try again do you mean rebuild the server or just restart the connector software?

    Cheers

    Hi

    Ok

I did the reinstall again but this time i did not create the d partition.

This seemed to help as it ran straight through without a problem after that.

I have updated the software and placed HP update 2.5 onto the system.

And that killed it dead, the hp video convertor is greyed out and twonkymedia dies every other 10 minutes.

Might give up at this rate and just use the standard install.

Vmware image is ALWAYS the same, it makes no difference what your real harware is!

How come it does NOT run nice on real hardware?
MSS on Vmware is great as proof of concept. Totally pointless as VM IMHO

    HP MMS v3.0

HP are releasing the v3.0 of their MMS sofware in December.
Its being released as a 'Server Recovery' DVD and will work on all MMS models.

Hopefully it will work on DIY home servers too. :D

Great, we only need the DVD... (hopefully will be easier to obtain than Recovery DVD from EX48x range)
