I can confirm, HP doesn't provide smc.bin any more. Looks like for newer models, replacing or programing the bios chip might be the only option.
well im screwed then. Ssd died on this EliteBook 840 g2 i got for free so i bought a new one to load windows on to but can't get into bios to use the windows iso off the flash drive
same thing with me, a mate brought his 640 g2 over with a dead HDD and replacing prompts for BIOS password. annoying.
Today i as well got ignored from HP for the smc.bin file. So i will just replace the chip , i am not going to buy another motherboard as they suggested (crazy thinking ,for a service that was free, now to pay an entire motherboard) .
With another Computer, can you prepare SSD to be bootable with Windows 10 ISO, and insert SSD into "broken" computer to run Windows install from internal SSD ?

I contacted hp today again. No SMC.bin. Looks like Hp blocked the tools from working. This possibly depends on bios version. Early version 68CCU Version F.12 it may still work but 68CCU Version F.50 nope. Hoping @Mazzif can find a solution. After 20 years using Hp I cannot support this bad business move. They are clearly not supporting us. Another thing I have learned from reading about this is the password lock could be caused by Hp Project Tools.
Yep same problem here. I contacted HP UK and they refuse to help saying SMC file is no longer provided to anyone. Instead wanted to send a service engineer at huge cost to replace entire motherboard. Needless to say I told them what they could do with that. No am stuck with no way to reset my HP Zbook G2 =(
I find it strange 2 month after they stop giving out smc.bin i get locked out of my bios. I have owned this 8440p from day one almost 8 years. Thank goodness i was able to remove bios password but now no serial. I think this bios crackdown has to do with uefi lojack trojan. Hp is terrified lol I am done with hp. Next laptop will be an Asus.

@Mazzif so there is not any bootable "app" to remove bios password from 840 G2? The way is to remove bios from MB, read, erase and write new data?
@Mazzif my company is a recycler of laptops which would otherwise be thrown in the garbage. I would love to get your help from unlocking a bunch of laptops I have. Right now I have 25+ HP ProBook 640 G1's on hand right now that I need the bios reset or otherwise they'll end up in the dump. Would appreciate it if you could reach out and help us out. Thanks!
