[INFO] Windows 2000 and 9x CD Info

I call this one a "homebrew", it's a late rtm - oem_fpp but cdimage is a badly patch, there is also a timestamp of 2009 embedded.

Can't find any obvious (need more time with this one).
Have no reason to doubt that content of both images is not original.
They use @vanelle 's naming scheme in image name so he might like to chime in.

All Windows 95 CDs are non-bootable. The OEM versions came with a template boot disk that the OEM had to add the cdrom driver sys file to it and modify the autoexec.bat/config.sys and an .inf file to work properly.

Windows 98 SE was the first 9x version to be bootable off the CDROM and these contained generic IDE and SCSI cdrom drivers. (I thought FE was too but just checked my ISOs and doesn't appear to have an el-torito sector)

Windows 98 boot disks work well with Windows 95 CDs, and are often used to save having to manually create the Windows 95 CDROM boot floppy.

I have an original untouched image of the Win 95 OSR2 floppy boot disk template as issued to OEMs if anyone is interested. Came straight out of a sealed generic OEM OPK kit back in 1996. I've never seen a copy of this disk in untouched form on the internet archive/winworld etc. so happy to share.

 

Do you have the win95 OSR2 OPK CD? That's undumped still (only dumped win9x opk is win95 osr1)

 

As far as I am aware there isn't one as the files for the OPK are actually on the OSR2 CD themselves in the form of the \admin\mkcwrt.exe file and the files in \admin\nettools\fac folder - where the .dta files in there are actually cabs that make up the OSR2 OPK.

If you run the mkcwrt.exe file with the correct parameters then it will install the OPK onto a running Win95 install and allow you to build a OEM preinstall script. I used to do this quite regularly back in 1997.

Sadly I've lost the paper booklet that explained how to install and use the tool, but if you search for 'mkcwrt.exe' there is some info available on BetaArchive on how to install it.

'Officially' the OEM is supposed to copy their cdrom driver .sys file to the disk and then edit config.sys / autoexec.bat / drvcopy.inf as per the comments within the files before giving the disk to the 'customer'.

But for speed and minimal work just grab a copy of the generic IDE driver OAKCDROM.SYS from a 98 CD boot floppy and put it on this disk and rename it to SAMPLE.SYS and it will work fine without editing any of the files on the disk.

 

Because I had a few questions around this and the lack of consensus I opened Windows 95c - osr 2.5 with Plus! - English version. in hope to get some more opinions.
Same files, only different productiondate.
And from here it's pure speculation only.

Yeah, oakcdrom.sys works well on older computers I have laying around.
But I find this more helpfull when sorting out floppies from that era.
One of many clues to look out for so any untouched image helps a lot for comparison.
(to some degree anyway)

There were official win9x OPK CDs too with extra tools like pisetup. Only one has been dumped cleanly so far (win95 OSR1), there's also a partial folder dump of a win98 beta OPK that includes win95 OSR2 OPK docs in word .doc format.

I've seen some pictures of some others, they were labeled MS confidential, I think only "bigger" OEMs got them.
