The high temperature is appearently normal operating temperature for this model according to HP... I would just like to make the fan run at maximum, or somewhat high speed, at a lower temperature. I would like to level the speed curve but HP doesn't let me access fan speeds in the BIOS. Right now my laptop just doesn't use it's fans enough.

Edit: Also, I'm a little bit of a coward when it comes to opening my new laptop, so before I try that, I would like to make sure I have checked out any possible software-level solution :)

You should check if there is any dust layer collected on the inner side of the heatseank. Just blow briefly to the vent hole (do it with energy :) ), if there any dust comes off, then you need to clean the heatsink from the inside. It is very common problem with notebooks.
