Hey, in beta stage it is normal some drivers missing, just wait that Intel release well tested and full working drivers (maybe it not believes in Windows 8????) yep, 8 as it is on normal computers is designed to fail, on tablets may be a good OS. M$ has done a great mistake, closing Windows 8 MSDN blogs, 18 days with no such info or review about new OS.... This will be only a sign, nothing to say about, or scared of negative feedbacks or impressions..... Windows 8 is already a fail... On desktop returned to beloved Windows 7, as best as ever with P7H55 Mb and intel graphic(CP a piece of s**t on it with bugs and non working drivers, but it uses less resources than 7) On Dell D630, skipping all Metro crap and apps, with classic shell, yes working far better than Windows 7(fast and using less resources).... So let's see guys... but you remember how much we are exited in the 7955 and 7989 era? now just silence and no comments...
Well theirs probably some good and bad, if not for classicshell at sourceforge.net/ I would have stayed with Win 7, but now I can find things pretty easy, it's OK.
USING WINDOWS 8 Well if you don't like the Metro thing you have the option of running win 8 WDP and disabling the metro start page (rename the file shsxs.dll to shsxs.dll.old) and this will disable the metro thing and give you a standard win 7 look and operating system. you will also have the start button and functions of win 7 but still have the other features of win 8 like the UI ribbon which i really like and the new task system. those are really the only things i care about. So give it a try..I'm sure you will love it.
Well the problem with the start menu and start button can be resolved on Windows 8 by installing a third party software liker Classic Shell,Vi Start, or Start Menu 7. All of these 3 software's will put both the start orb and Windows 7 or Windows XP start menu in Windows 8. And the start menu works like it does in Windows 7 and Windows XP. Andrea Borman.
Ugly! I think Microsoft is living in the past with it ugly Metro UI. I think that the use of 1 color icon is a waste of power that the present day computer/tablets have. Most computers can display HD including most tablets. I had a windows phone for about a year and finally got rid of it. Windows 8 is basically the same. Not a popular phone OS. I now have an Android phone and in my opinion is the best phone or table os you can get. I did install Windows 8 on my laptop as soon as it was available and it still sucks. But still there will be people who love it and other that hate it.... it' just an opinion!
Well I have Windows 8 CP installed on two netbooks as the only operating system. One of the netbooks is an HP Mini 2.1 and the other one is a HP Mini 110, a newer model. Both are just basic 1GB ram netbooks that came with Windows 7 starter when I bought them. And from my experience Windows 8 is similar to Windows 7 if you ignore the Metro theme. The only disadvantage is that the Metro apps don't work on a netbook because a netbook does not have a screen resolution above 700 pixels. But the final version may be made to support a lower screen resolution so that the Metro apps will work on netbooks. But you can use all of your software that you use on Windows 7,Google Chrome,VLC media player,Windows Live Messenger etc.And you can access all of the computer settings and control panel settings and other Windows software like Wordpad,Paint and others, the same way you do on Windows 7. So you don't need the Metro apps, and all of the software that you use and install will be displayed on the start screen, which is the Metro start menu. And not only that, but you can run all of the software from Windows XP and Windows Vista on Windows 8.I have got Windows Mail from Windows Vista working on windows 8,Windows Sidebar from Windows Vista,Windows Calendar and Windows Movie Makers 2.1 from Windows XP.And Windows Movie Maker 2.6.Also all of the games from Windows XP work on Windows and and also Microsoft Entertainment Pack games. Which is for Windows 95 and Windows NT works on Windows 8. Also Windows 8 runs 16 bit software if you have got the 32 bit version of Windows 8 like I have got. Also all of the games from Windows Vista and Windows 7 work, if you use a file patch like the Windows 7 Games Patcher The other software such as Windows Mail works if you copy the dill file Msidcrl 30.dill which can be found in your Windows System 32 folder on Windows 7 over from Windows 7 to System 32 in Windows 8. And I found a download from Blaines Movie Maker blog for Windows Movie Maker 6 and now I have Movie Maker 6 working on Windows 8. All I had to do was register the dill files first, with Emsa dill file register tool.Although you can register the dill files manually in command prompt but that is more difficult. The only issue I have on Windows 8 is that although most of the features of Windows Movie Maker 2.1 and 2.6 work including the webcam feature on 2.1. The title feature does not although it works on Movie Maker 6. And all of the features work on Movie Maker 6.But maybe that will be fixed in the next edition of Windows 8. But in short, you can run most if not all of your Windows XP and software for Windows 2000,98 and 95 on Windows 8, as well as the software from Windows Vista and Windows 7. It is true that on Windows 8 CP you can no longer disable the Metro theme. But the way round this is to install a third party software like Classic Shell or Start Menu 7.Which bring back both the start orb and the Windows 7 and Windows XP start menu on Windows 8. And there is several other start menu software that puts both the start orb and Windows 7 start menu on Windows 8. The final release of Windows 8 that will go out on sale to the public may be like Windows 8 CP.In that you may not be able to disable the Metro theme. But then you can just install Classic Shell or another software to get the start orb and Windows 7 start menu on Windows 8.Andrea Borman.
Intel and all other hardware/software manufacturers work close together with MS and I'm very positive that there will be ways out of all mentioned problems. Metro will work soon as supposed to and all the other stuff. IT IS BETA and not RTM, consider this !!!! I would like to see a new 8 better than the one before without all old BS in it but I will take it as it comes when available ... ( Yen probably will fix it for the all of us ) or we wil find ways ... Paul
there are only 2 things that make Win 8 suck: 1. Can't install Office 2010 Starter from OPK, 2. It dosen't enable snap under 1366*768.
Windows 8 to me was clearly designed for a touch screen environment. If you install it and only use the Metro apps, then it is great. However if you try to access other programs you install, this is where you will run into problems. You can install a third party Start Menu Made by Stardock called Start 8. With this installed you can still use the Metro UI or Start 8. My problem is, as a gamer, I want to customize my user experience and in Windows 7 this is easy. In windows 8 even finding the control panel is hard. Maybe by release it will be much more user friendly. Remember this is still a beta and was released to the public to get feedback in the first place. I personally hate it and I will stay with Windows 7 as long as I can. Having an Insane amount of computers, that all run Windows 7 makes life easier as they all work on my home network. Windows 8 will not connect to the home network in Windows 7. This was yet another annoying scenario. Having tried Windows 8 on a Laptop and a Desktop, I did mostly get frustrated and annoyed after trying for hours to navigate and customize simple things. Yes Windows 8 to me is a step backwards. I love Windows 7. To put this in perspective Windows 8 will be great and easy to use for people with Tablets and Smart Phones, as it will be a familiar user experience. For a Desktop user that is productive and familiar with the layout of old, e.g. using a start menu then this will be painful to navigate.
Well Steve if you install Classic Shell which now works on Windows 8 CP you will have the Windows 7 or Windows XP start menu. Classic Shell gives you the Windows XP and Classic start menu on Windows 8. And it also has the Windows Vista and 7 start menu. And also Classic Shell puts the start orb in Windows 8.Classic Shell also works with your Windows key. So you only see the Metro start screen at start up. The rest of the time you deal with the desktop and Windows XP start menu. There is also Start Menu 7 which does the same thing. When you first set up Windows 8 it connects to public by default. But you can change this to private network which is home network. All of the Windows XP and Windows Vista software works on Windows 8. Andrea Borman.
I say Windows 8 stinks as well! Why would you ruin the desktop that EVERYONE knows Windows by and add this metro ui thing? Dumb in my eyes.
Well you can have the traditional Windows start menu on Windows 8 CP. Here is my Windows XP start menu on my Windows 8.I use Classic Shell. Even if they don't bring back the option to disable the Metro theme. Most people will just install third party start menu software like Classic Shell, like I have done. And there are other start menu software's that work on Windows 8 CP.Andrea Borman.
It is only my opinion, but I truly am very disappointed in how Windows 8 looks. I installed Windows 8 CP, and after using it for only two days, decided that it seems to be a huge step backwards. I have read the posts here and know that there are people who hate it, and those that seem to love it. I just couldn't believe that I was using a Windows OS. It is drastically different from its predecessors, and as has already been stated, so unlike Windows without that well known start menu. Andrea posted that we can get 3rd party apps that will install a start menu. Thanks Andrea for sharing that. But, all in all, I was truly hoping that Windows 8 would be an improvement over Windows 7. I think Windows 7 is as close to perfect as M$ has ever gotten in an OS. Vista was a total flop, and XP was truly great (but not as great as Windows 7). I believe that most people will not fall for this Windows 8 total overhaul from the user experience that Windows users have come to know and feel comfortable with. As of this post, only 42.26% of people like the new Windows 8 interface. As more votes come in, I expect that number to get even lower. M$ is shooting itself in the foot with this new garbage called Windows 8 and that is not just my opinion (as the poll supports my assertion). It isn't the first time that M$ has done that (again - the Vista total failure). Let's just hope that this is the LAST time M$ releases such junk. To want their activation implemented in the manner that they have setup for Windows 8, may M$ miserably fail with this sad excuse for an OS. Their evil intentions and control freak agenda has never been more apparent and should be evident to all by now. Wake up everyone!
Late here, and tired...of windows 8 too.... Negative and positive feedbacks, but.... last time i say, the most are negative, for "most" i say users, customers, developers.... Someone say evidently that "most" are childs, Mac users, dumb...asf(i've heard everything around...) But the "most" will choose if upgrade/install to 8.... Now make your conclusion, let see when RTM comes out, how many copies M$ will sell.... and how many PC will not sell with Windows 8 (OEM trash) Socrates007 we "most" are all wake and fresh, we are going to enjoy 7 for a long time.... maybe Microsoft is going to suffer instead..... And children are the one who plays with lego colored tiles....
Well when Microsoft release a new version of Windows, they normally stop selling the old version. Like they did with Windows XP and Windows Vista. So now we can only buy Windows 7.Unless you buy a second hand or reconditioned laptop. So at some point in the future they may stop selling Windows 7. And even if you already have a computer. If you need a Windows CD you may only be able to buy the latest version, which could be Windows 8. So you may have to use Windows 8 one day. So it is a good idea to try to get used to it. At first when I found out I could not disable the Metro theme like I could in Windows 8 DP I was very upset. Then when I found out that some third party that could enable the Windows 7 start menu worked on Windows 8 CP.I tried it and it worked,it gave me both the start orb and Windows 7 start menu. At that time in March, Classic Shell did not work on Windows 8 CP. So I used Start Menu 7,which did work. Then when they updated Classic Shell to work on Windows 8 CP.I switched to Classic Shell, which I am now using. The new version supports Windows 8 CP. I would like to see a Windows 8 without the Metro theme. And I also miss the Windows Classic theme which has been on windows 7 and before that Windows Vista and Windows XP.But there is no Windows Classic in Windows 8,just a Windows 8 Basic theme(like the Windows 7 basic theme.) But I have always used Windows Classic which disables Aero completely. And I miss it a great deal on Windows 8.But because I have got Classic Shell installed which takes over the Windows key. I only see the Metro start screen at start up. And the rest of the time I am on the desktop with my Windows XP start menu.Which works the same way it does in Windows 7. So if you have got Classic Shell or another start menu software installed, you hardly know that the Metro theme is there. As you deal with the Windows XP or Windows 7 start menu. Not the Metro start menu. They may not bring back the option to disable the metro theme. But as long as we can use third part start menu software. Which most people will do. Most people won't find that a problem. There are also some bugs in this Beta version but that should be sorted out in the final version. Andrea Borman.
Alex, You said it perfectly. Yes, most of us on this forum are awake and know the score. But, way too many outside of here are not. If M$ gets their way on this new activation monopoly, may they truly suffer by all of us sticking with Windows 7.....or Linux.....or Mac.......or ANYTHING but that ugly looking monster called Windows 8.
I understand what you are saying, but I will NEVER get used to that crappy looking 3-eyed fangled monster called Windows 8. When M$ tried to shove Vista down our throats, I stayed with XP for years afterwards. I simply refuse to use total garbage like that and we shouldn't have to resort to using 3rd party apps to keep fixing M$'s blunders. Instead, M$ should listen to their consumer base and act in accordance with the users wishes and feedback. And don't even get me started about their new Houdini based activation scheme for OEM computers. How dare any company come off that smug and indifferent to its user base, and then have the nerve to shove such a horrible looking OS down our throats. M$ is going to screw itself again and time will show such to be true. If you read some of the posts in other threads about how controlling and predatory M$ is acting in regards to the new activation and UEFI, etc.........then I hope people will really stand strongly against it. M$ has always been predatory and that is not news to anyone, but they have taken it to a new level this time! Just good old M$ at their best as always. I do thank you for posting about alternatives to patch the sickening trash code from M$. It's just that M$ should be doing that themselves instead of us relying on 3rd party coders to salvage the rubbish from Redmond.
Remember when all those people who bought new computers with Vista they chose instead to downgrade to XP? Well thats what I think is going to happen with Windows 8, people are going to "upgrade" to Windows 7 Personally I was optimistic, but after this crap with the DVD support and WMC I think it blows! (they should at least add Blu-ray support if the expect you to pay for WMC)
On Windows 7 I have WMC but I never use it. It is always turned off in Windows features. I use Windows XP most of the time. And on my edition of Windows XP,Home Edition there is no WMC. And also on my other Windows Vista laptop, which has Windows Vista Home Basic,WMC is not included in that version either. And also because I have got WMP11 for Windows 7 instead of WMP12 on both Windows 7 and Windows 8. To run that you have to turn all media features off, including WMC, in order to run WMP 11. So WMC is not part of my Windows 7. And as I have netbooks I won't be looking at live TV or playing live DVDs. But there is probably other media players or third party software that can do that besides WMC. Andrea Borman.
I'm still running XP for now, it works perfectly well for me but I 'll be "forced" to upgrade soon because 16 gig of ram require 64 os (I know 64 bit xp exists but...) Anyway, windows 8 problem is metro that's what make it fail. For the record, about 85% of my clients still use XP PRO (the rest is 7, mostly) and that will not change in the near future... It would be interesting to know if the metro UI could be disabled / deleted from W8
