    Woot! :D

I know you've probably seen the info on here but thought I would suggest anyway. The free Classic Shell v3.51 is just as good, and actually better if you want it to be, Start Menu as Windows 7's or any other versions of Windows you might want the Start Menu to look and act like. With this latest version, after installed, it even bypasses the Metro Start Screen when you logon. It only shows for a second or two then it automatically loads the Desktop. It's great! Highly recommended! I probably would've started using it long ago with Windows 7 (you can use with Vista and I think even XP if you want) if I had known it's power.

I did see that, a couple reasons I am being stubborn but that may be just me. I feel I have to give it a chance and as you said, it takes a second for it to kick in, I would feel like I have my blinders on, like I am missing something. If I in the end can't get used to metro I suppose it will either be the classic shell or stick with 7.... It is a preview version after all. I want to give it a chance, see if I can become accustomed to it and then make up my mind by RTM.. If I learn it and don't like it, fine. But if I don't like it because I didn't bother that is different
Also I am an old fella, once I quit learning new things and start hanging on to the "old" ways I will become a grumpy old man, grumpy old men are funny but it wears off... I'd rather stay young and keep learning new things, going new places... I tried surfing this spring, playing with Windows 8 right now and plan on trying snowboarding this winter, I used to ski many years ogo but I think it is getting dated, wanna try boarding for fun..

I feel your pain. I am actually thinking to myself "Will microsoft ever release a business-oriented operating system again?". I can't help but feel that there has been nothing but F%$&-Ups and useless junk piled into Wizards and obscure settings pages since windows XP. I really miss Windows 2000, it had what you needed, and nothing you didn't.

Well, I do have an android phone, but it has it's own email account attached. No, I don't like my personal data integrated and tied to everything I do on my PC.

your feeling is same as milions out there.... milions stick with windows 7(or upgrade to 7 from XP) or use RP(until it can be done) which in some PC's is very stable, others that not like Microsoft direction will try Apple......

So where will be such a enormous success Microsoft is expecting?? :D

Microsoft is trying to create their own, they know that Apple has them cornered and they are scared, rightly so. XP is going to be phased out and there is millions of users that will be looking for alternatives in the next couple years. Android, iOS both have Microsoft beat in the tablet and phone markets and the general public is wanting their electronic devices to be somewhat similar. Why have an Android phone, an iPad and a Windows laptop? People don't want to deal with so many different operationg systems, it is an additional headache in a hectic world. Microsoft sees this coming and know that they have to either create excitement of their phone and tablets, make them competitive or people will start switching to Apple or Android for their laptops, then eventually their home PCs. It is not so much a question of price as it is a question of convienence. Those that can afford Apple will likely switch to Apple, others will switch to Android. Microsoft is being squeezed from both sides.
Microsoft is fighting back hard, they have to to survive! Wow, huh. I bet you wondered if you would see the day. They are not so concerned with the MP3 market, most of them are going to be using their phone as their integrated device, MP3s will follow if they can show success in the phone market, an iPod is just an iPhone without a phone app. 15$ upgrades for new hardware, 40$ upgrades for older hardware. They need to create the hype around the new OS. Perhaps it may fail, people resist change. But that gives them until 2014 (unless they extend it temporarily) to convince all the XP owners to upgrade to a Windows PC. Their hype will be how many licenses they sell compared to Apple when Windows 8 is released. If they can convince the general public that Windows is still dominate then they have a hope in the phone and tablet market. As I said, the general public don't want to have to keep up with learning different OS's for each device. That is why all the similarities between Windows phone and Windows 8. Same reason Apple is integrating iOS with OSX.

Lol, I don't doubt it for a minute to be honest. People hate change. But look for Windows 9 to have a totally unique name and an option to have a start button to appease the XP market, it is an aging market, the hardware is really starting to get old now. But MS has to get something happening in these other markets or they will be crowded out of the market. By the time Windows 9 comes out people will be more used to Metro and it wil be acceptable. Just as you say, it is a curse and that is why you see Microsoft fighting it so hard....

There is nothing badly wrong with the current HW.

There is everything wrong with yet another push by a monopolist for yet stronger HW to buy... by all...

The business told them off and gave Vista a miss [completely] and I have a feeling the same will happen again, with W8, as many have warned...

But will m$ listen?!? Will they fook...

Thats the way I feel about it. Not everyone is 16 anymore and attached to phone and constantly texting with earbuds in.

Business people (the people who are going to BUY an OS probably OEM or possibly corp) and their employees ARE a bit older, they want a solid stable OS to do WORK on and their already trained on XP, they don't want to relearn how to shut down the computer or go for tiled apps nonsense.

Most corps STILL use XP! They buy brand new win7 loaded hardware and ghost them all to XP. The networking was easier before 2003 and Vista, true, IT should know their stuff but...

    KISS

However the world is changing, Mac and Android are rising and MS has to compete. Maybe they should return to the two OS front like in the daze of 2000 and ME. One serious, one playfull.

    Best Wishes

PS I can't help but feel the whole world is spying on every keystroke we do these daze and i fear one day they will act on all that info. Run Daz's loader to install a key and cert on the dell you just reloaded cause it's easy and bang! Busted and your a cyber terrorist.

Monopolist? You must mean Apple? The ones that insist all programmers give them a cut of the action (App Store) and won't allow you to use their OS unless you pay ransom fees for their hardware, price fix their hardware and try to tell you they are so good to you by letting you have updates to their OS for cheap?
@ brut7, I think you may be right there. They have a customer base that is older and doesn't want or like change (XP) and they need to attract a new customer base from the younger generation that will be the ones doing the purchasing in the future. Why not get rid of Metro and put a XP style start button there for the mature segment (so they may stay current, yet comfortable) and have Metro there for the future segment (so they may stay connected). Microsoft want to force the same thing down everyone's throat and that won't work. They did well with Windows 7 (for the mature segment) but they haven't learned that segment will resist change. New PCs that the mature segment will be purchasing as their XP machines are starting to show their age need to have an OS thay can identify with or they won't buy. I can see a Vista style revolt where the manufacturers are forced to install Windows 7 back in the new hardware to sell the computers. Maybe instead of Windows 8 they should have called it Windows Metro and offered it as an alternative, something fresh for the younger generation, yes

The company I work, >100.000 employees, are still running XP and they are finally planning to go to Windows 7 (due to the support issues). They are not interested in the price (large contracts with low upgrade costs) but more in the managing costs and the knowledges the have invested.

So windows is the only Business option to use. Apple, Linux, Android is no option and will not be!

Windows 8 -> at least another 10 years before support on Windows 7 will end......... :worthy:

Before that Windows 10 will be the new version :haha:

And we will all work virtualized on Windows 2018 Hyper-V with the new Windows 10 interface......

And we have all forgot about Windows 8

Shakeyplace, yes m$ is a monopolist... read back a bit...

The fact there is an ever worst kind than them is neither here nor there - just another example of s**te forced onto those who depend on them...

Yaaaaaa, Loded up a machine again yesterday....

I even know my way around it already... It's my second gig to know this stuf.

It sucks, plain and simple w8 SUCKS bad.

I'm sure to NOT be laying it on 300 corp computers and thats MY choice.

On the flipside W7 upgrade may be authorized soon and thats just money in the bank.

Well as I said a couple of pages ago, Windows 8 is what you make it to be.
I made it awesome with a couple of my own tweaks and I'm really looking forward to the day I can use Windows 8 on every day basis.
I really like what they have done with it.

Visually? But that's more you than m$, right?

OK, so what have they done with it, really - what about the substance?

What's with not giving an option for a START menu, when most HW does not have a touch screen, for instance?

Is there a real improvement in terms of kernel? If memory serves, Yen showed there is no substantial change in those, essential terms. Moreover, what is "new" is not theirs but stolen from others...

    Go figure...
