We know its not called Metro anymore, but what is it called? "Windows 8 Interface"? So what is the desktop? "Windows 7 on 8 Interface"? It is called Metro on Windows Phone and it is the same, well almost, as the UI on Windows 7 Phone (I got one). So forgive me if Bollmer is making stuff a tiny bit confusing. ("Bolle" is f**k in Danish so Ballmer become Bollmer but can also be f**kmer, but that is a bit far fetched so we call the UI f**kmer? Sorry I am rambling. To little coffee this morning.)
It's not just you. I HATE the Metro interface. I don't see why they didn't leave the start menu in the desktop so that people who liked Metro could use Metro and people who like the desktop could use the desktop with the start menu. To me the Metro desktop is nothing more than a desktop with way too many shortcuts on it. There should be an easier way to open your favorite and most used programs without having to go thru the Metro interface. I guess I'll stick with Windows 7. I like that interface much better. This opens the door for Linux or even the Hackintosh community to grow.
I wasn't too excited about metro either, but im starting to like organizing my applications in it. At first i jumped on the linux bandwagon, as valve stated their support with steam. As excited i was to replace windows with ubuntu, i installed it and have been changing desktop enviroments for a while. Nothing really stood a chance against what i had in Windows 7 & Windows 8 Desktop.Plenty of bugs, not able to install post-release fgrlx drivers, system crashing, email not loading. Personal opinion, but i still think the increase linux might meet is minimal it's not ready yet. Hackintosh & Mac would probably get more users tho. I'd be so much happier, if i could boot into desktop. And metro would JUST be my start menu, nothing else. I am actually going to purchase Windows 8, because of the low price & improved performance, and rumours about beeing able to play xbox games on it.
I did not liked tiles in Consumer and Release Preview, but during the time I've got used to it and do not miss Start menu anymore. I've installed for Grandpa too, and he likes for first try. Much easier to launch programs from tile, than bugging in start menu. And Everything else better, like boots in 10 seconds with regular HDD what is amazing. Windows 7 had to have 25sec with SSD. So improvements are great.
I feel the same way about the start menu and I don't know why MS is so adamant about the metro start menu , they should allow users to choose what they want, since they are paying for the OS, MS should not force their opinions on them.
MS improvement on system resources and the removal of aero is a good improvement though , I wish they would offer an alternative windows 8 without metro, metro really sucks.
Windows 8 sucks big time we want a working regualr desktop! I tried to work with windows 8 desktop without the start button Gave up and installed Classic Shell At least I can hobble about without pulling my hair By the way I am calling 8 "Vista 2.0"
What if Windows 8 or any other version sucks either build a Hackintosh use Linux or simply use a replacement shell. You can get rid of those crap icons in metro.
Maybe StarDock or ViStart can help. On StarDock I read that you have a check option to directly enter the desktop on boot.
I reckon if Nexus Ulimate works under Windows 8 then you can hide the task bar altogether maybe even disable Metro in future release. I can confirm that it does work and looks great. I have pinned a shortcut in Metro incase it crashes, but I cannot see that happening.
I tend to agree with you. So far I dislike this WIN 8 with a passion but let me express my personal views as why: 1) Have a HTC Surroung phone with WIN 7.5 Mango 2) Loaded WIN 8 Enterprise yesterday in WM Ware Workstation latest.... A) It seems you need yes or yes an email account to log in (hotmail even better) B) Looks like my HTC phone................ Some of my rapid conlcusions are: 1) It is a "transition" operating system and dual "human stack" 2) You can get the desktop if you are in a "normal" PC or laptop 3) You can go back to "Mango 7.5" like if you are in tablet or phone, etc. It seems faster since the graphics are mediocre and must be efficient for portable/mobile devices and again, if you are at home in the PC and used to the traditional.......... This is only one OS (operating system) that will start making humans ready for the greatest robbery in history. We are going back to 1960's with main frame computers and this is now called CLOUD. When we have fibre to the home and better 4G/LTE or WiMax,etc,etc..................we are going to experience that PC's and the like, whatever you want to call them, size, etc, etc; there will be enough pipe to do the data transfers for all of us. So no need for hard drives and have operating systems and applications/programs running locally. In other words...........back to dumb terminals and you will pay and pay for every single packet and usage, just like telephone companies have been billing us since Graham Bell days................. I have nothing against WIN 8 but graphics and quality is what I like and used to. To me is great in the HTC phone but.................... I will try not to touch this as much as I can avoid it
I wish I could change my vote on the poll. I said "yes it sucks" back during the release preview. And truly, at the time, it did. I have since installed RTM on my primary machines and I am completely blown away. I installed Server 2012 on some of my server virtual machines and I am even more blown away. It's fast. I can run a full Hyper-V infrastructure on a client workstation. You can pause and get more detail on file copy operations. It runs everything I have tried. It's fast. Did I say that already? I'll say it again. It's fast. The only complaints I have so far are: (1) Q6600 can't run client Hyper-V but it can run Hyper-V if I install Server? Really? What were they smoking? (2) Machines that would run DP and CP builds won't run RP or RTM because they don't support hardware DEP/NX. Really? What happened to "if it runs Windows 7 it will run Windows 8?" (3) the utterly damnable full-screen applications. I don't run anything full screen on 1920x1200 dual monitors and it is an insult that these apps think they are running on a phone, and cannot be adjusted except for sliding so that they take up less but still full height. Let me resize the metro apps, I'm happy.
this is a Old Story, reverted back to Windows 7 from a month time... I'm using 8 from the 7850, after DP becomes unusable, and after RP "upgrading" back to 7 is a must, now just "playing on RTM" for "give a finger to M$" and activate that crap ! 8 is only faster at start up, really no benefits more in 8, only forcement and feature removal... .... huh which is the name of the new UI?? Modern UI??
..funny name, eh? hahaha Yeah! they got bitchslapped for using "Metro" name btw. I like your new avatar, LOL
Hey Bro, avatar is ready for 8 rtmming...... and from new Microsoft blog: a smell a big lawsuit of forcement!!! So if a Buy a Windows RT machine i cannot use Winamp or Photoshop?????? OFFTOPIC: Bro tomorrow i will share to you for testing my theme.... its nearly finished, i cannot manage to make the command module bar transparent, or better if i test(on WSB) or put the msstyle into another theme it works, if i create my own .theme file, when opened on personalization window, it becomes white grrrr.....
What an idiot. So why don't you stick with Windows 7? Why are you using Windows 8 than? I don't get it. Why people are pissing all over it and modify it and using it. Don't like it don't use it. Stop bitching if you are using it for free.
