your machine was probably bought with win8.1 home preinstalled on it, if it's the case, that would explain why your win10 home was activated automatically as the bios key is used to activate win10 automatically with digital license.
That only goes for 8/10 MSDM, win 7 slic is only used when upgraded to 10 or using a generated genuineticket.xml.
Im confused, how does this work just built a new pc and was going to use my old win7key to upgrade but the pc crashes with usb errors when I try using it so I can't do it that way so if this is good tell me exactly how to do it.
Clean install the corresponding windows 10 edition the key is for on 7 and insert it after install is finished. During win 10 install skip the questions for a key. Example: If the win 7 key was for Win 7 Home-Premium, install Win 10 Home and after the install is finished go to: Settings>Update and security>activation>change product key.
Thats fine, I have a 7 key it just seems to right now not directly take my key on win10 activation Oh and thanks EDIT 2 well when I use the 7 key I have (from OEM I think) it gives me one of 2 errors either a generic one or saying key is invalid. the method given gives me some sort of invalid error too Microsoft Windows [Version 10.0.16299.214] (c) 2017 Microsoft Corporation. All rights reserved. C:\Windows\system32>Clipup.exe -v -d -k Done. Converted license Microsoft.Windows.101.X19-98868_8wekyb3d8bbwe and stored at (null). Successfully converted 1 licenses from genuine authorization tickets on disk. Done. C:\Windows\system32>slmgr.vbs -ato C:\Windows\system32> The error I get is something about file or directory not known
No idea, its been years since I got it what I notice though is the activation page shows a old generic key.
I just removed key with cmd now it says product not found seems to be not noticing the key I add Its the stored at null that is confusing
I honestly can't remember how I got it but it wasn't torrented or cd key websites but have been using it for years on win7 no problems with multiple reactivations.
the filename, directory name or volume label syntax is incorrect is the error, and just tried a key I know is legit as its a retail key I got at launch.
Never mind activated officially with that key I knew was retail, guessing I can't use it on win 7 now though
Just did a test on a laptop that never saw 10 Pro, it has a MSDM for 8 Core (and a HWID for 10 Home), inserted the generic Pro key (-3V66T) and it got HWID activated after upgrading to Pro.
