    Hi,

I have a new harddisk. It is Hitachi 160G SATA. The bios detected the new harddisk, but after waiting about 20 seconds when booting , I got this message:

    Harddisk Error (XXXX)

In the CMOS setting screen, the harddisk has been detected, but its size is 0,and other parameters are blank.

I also heard strange sounds ( not too sharp) after powerd on my machine.

My motherboard and CPU are both new. I have tried set the IDE mode to non-RAID and AHCI, and have changed diffrent sata ports. The sata cable was come from my motherboard, so it could't be a problem.

    Is the harddisk bad ?

    Thank you.

if there is any sign of noise, it is not a good thing.....
I have a Hitachi CinemaStar HDD and it has 22 reallocated sectors, I will never buy Hitachi again!
    My drive is 164.7 GB.

If can get Spinrite the computer will boot into it if it is set to boot from cd and you can do a thorough check of the drive and possible recovery. It is worth a try.
