I have had some issued getting 9901 activated also. Sometimes a re-boot or two does the trick and once it activated while I was doing something else, I am always connected to internet. Maybe if you do nothing for a while it will "call home" and get activated - ya' gotta love Beta OSes.
Actualy I had the same problem with the first install of build 9901 had to do one of those time consuming Phone call to microsoft for activation. The second install activated without a problem very strange
Build 9901 has had the most varying results of any beta build I have installed. I have not had to phone activate though. I call this build "Nutsy 99"
I sincerely hope this continues for you...! I reached a coupled of plateaus with this build where I thought the same thing only to have things collapse to the point where I couldn't boot into anything but another administrator account...and the main account where I wanted to be simply wouldn't boot at all in the end. After I tired of heroic measures I disconnected the ventilator and pulled the plug and reverted to a clean 8.1 install...I'm done with 10 for the moment...maybe until it gets released...and maybe not even then for awhile. 9901 is the buggiest mess I've ever seen... But like I say, I hope you fare much better...!
I too have had to reinstall this build more then once on one laptop. I get it working just right, then bang it crashes or just does not want to restart. But I have not given up on it yet.
Must say reading all the posts on crashing an so I'm thinking that it must be hardware related maybe the new kernel does not work well with older hardware
I noticed the detecthal Yes entry was missing from bcd store, that caused similar issues with software earlier for me. maybe it helps to set that value.
Yes it all has to do with hardware. Major problems with hardware. I sent MS posts about the crashes and problems, have gotten some info from them but not all. They seem to be a little slow with coming out with fixes. Not sure why. With the other builds I got response fast from MS.
nah, not old hardware, I have not had 1 crash, 1 bsod, nothing, just as stable as 8.1, no problems whatsoever! I'm using a phenom x4 960t cpu, asus m5a78 mb based on sb710 amd chipset, radeon 7750
Even when it is seemingly running well, there are still a pile of failures showing up in the Event Log. Also, minidumps seem to continue to fill up the hard drive as well as I have to keep clearing those daily. And of course the sfc /scannow failures and more. I would say I have to agree with you that this is the buggiest mess at the moment and some of my recent words on stability are definitely wrong. It seems that the clash between Metro/Modern/Immersive trying to control the majority of the older underlying components is causing a lot of issues within this build. I've seen a lot of issues with the networking adapters failing as well because of this. And even after things seemed to be running great for a few hours, once one portion of the Metro/Modern/Immersive layer goes down then none of those apps work again at that point without a reboot. It has definitely proven to be unreliable over time. Here's hoping for another (more stable) leak before the new year. I'll stick with 9901 for now as I am trying to find more workarounds or preventative measures to prevent some of these issues.
Does anybody know what part of the underlying Windows 10 (likely 8.x as well) system is utilized to control those balloon notifications or newer toast notifications? It seems that none of those notifications work in build 9901, whereas they did work in previous builds. I would like to try and figure out how to get those working again in this build, depending on what services/files they rely on.
Agreed, 9901 is not very stable for me either. In the last three days I have already had to install three times and one full reset. All just from simple tinkering. However, not doing any system tinkering and just running basic software it seems to fly for me. Wanted to install an app that requires .NET 3.5 but that fails to download and install. Have not found the time to investigate it yet. Would love another more stable build by Christmas morning
