    Hall.dll

    This error can be the result of the following:

    1. HAL.DLL (in the System32 directory) is missing or corrupt;
    2. In boot.ini, the partition path designation is incorrect;
    3. In boot.ini, the "Default=" value is missing or invalid
    4. In boot.ini, XP is not installed in the location specified;
    5. The Ntoskrnl.exe file is missing or damaged.

    View the boot.ini file in notepad and make sure that numbers 2-4, above, are correctly set. Reinstall numbers 1 and 5 just to be sure. Are there other causes, yes but the above are the most common. If, as it appears, that you are booting from a multiboot system - XP/Vista - the root (C:\) must contain the XP Boot loader (boot.ini) which contains the various OS boot options.
