Hello, i got an old Toshiba Tecra A9 laptop, which was delivered with Windows Vista and has SLIC2.0. My goal: updating existing SLIC to 2.1 for Windows 7. It has a weird Intel bios, i tried tool oa2intel.exe and BT.exe, but both didn't work. So i will mod the bios-dump manually in hexeditor. I found the coherent table in dump, so it should work simply replacing it. I am wondering why the original table has Creator ID "TASM" instead of "MSFT". To my knowledge, Creator ID isn't necessary for decrypting digital signature. Hello, result: Didn't work. I tried several different mods (SLIC, microcode), the machine won't start up. Flashed back vanilla bios, works again. So i guess there is a somewhere a checksum or another check integrated, which i can't find.
@Lutschpuppe bioses from Toshiba laptops have a digital signature if you modify bios file the laptop does not boot I say that because I tried to mod my bios with h2oeze to change default values in bios and laptop does not boot after reprogramming with modded bios, with stock laptop boots normally
A few years ago i installed a modded BIOS on a Toshiba Satellite, also from SLIC 2.0 to 2.1, and it worked. But this was Phoenix- or AMI-BIOS, the normal modding-tool did the work, no need of dumping or hex-editing.......
CPU-Z is useless, it shows only the OEM-brandname; tested also with a second laptop, which has phoenix-bios. AIDA64 says "Toshiba", SLIC Toolkit seems to read the right information: vendor "Toshiba", type "Intel bios/acpi 1.0". No bios-tool is able to open or recognize this bios, neither the update-file, nor the SPI-dump. OEMs use a huge variety of bios-types: for example HP, i've seen every known bios-manufacturer.
@Lutschpuppe Are you alive and still looking for a solution? Can I have a look at your mod in which you tried to update SLIC so that I can confirm that you haven't made a mistake.
You can download it with VPN, Opera has this option OOB, many other browsers per add-on. I don't know if it depends from different CreatorID, i didn't change this ID. In my opinion, a "wrong" ID wouldn't cause a brick (the machine is not booting, no signs of life), but only a invalid or missing SLIC-table. Only newer machines have encrypted and non-moddable bios, this machine is from 2008. Testing is not easy, ISP is not possible with SPI-clamp, necessary to desolder/solder the chip for every test...........
@Lutschpuppe OK. Your modifications are good, but why the BIOS does not work, I still don't understand.
I tested now several mods, the flash-memory was desoldered and the test-programmed memory only pushed by hand on the pads. This machine works ONLY with unmodded SPI-dumps; i guess this f*cking bios (or EC) uses a checksum for unauthorized changes. I tried several mods: new SLIC-table, new microcodes, new microdes+new SLIC, only two different bytes in padding in vga-module (checksum equal, no correction needed) will lead to a non-booting state, also two flipped bytes.
I guess the only way you're putting a modded bios on that toshiba tecra laptop maybe is thru a ch341a flash programmer device - the software bios mod tools alone just won't cut it for some systems I think one of the comments I saw in win-raid forums regarding intel bios modding: Spoiler You will need CH341A flash programmer to update Intel board BIOS, no tools will flash the modified BIOS due to signature/security checks. You have to use flash programmer, dump and verify BIOS, then edit and once done re-program back to chip. but even attempting to do that may brick that laptop edit - if even that is not possible, next best thing is to go with the daz loader if you want slic 2.1 for win7; had to do this with a friend's old emachines PC with an Intel board that can't accept modded intel bioses (and this is a late 2006 model which is a little older than your Toshiba 2008 laptop)
This a VERY old laptop and only a sort of challenge. I got it from a friend, otherwise he had moved it to trash. Please read the topic - it is impossible to flash a bios with factory tools, it was alsways programmed with a SPI-programmer (necessary to desolder the rom-chip).
well not all Toshiba laptop bioses are created equal and Satellite is a different laptop series than Tecra or Portege and they chose to use digitally signed bioses for certain series or models time to admit defeat or throw in the towel, Lutschpuppe heck I couldn't even flash a modded bios onto a friend's old 2006 emachines PC that uses an Intel EFI bios chip (tried oa2intel, iflash.exe and even the bios recovery method which also ended up with blank screen on POST; pc turns on but no video - only works with signed/unmodded intel bioses)
@erpsterm35 IIRC, a lot of Acer/Gateway/eMachines PCs of that era used re-branded Intel motherboards that were powered by AMI BIOS. You need to unpack the AMI core from the BIO container, mod it, and flash using a patched flashing tool. If you still have access to that PC, then can you please share the exact model number of it?
