After latest updates, I even find my machines faster than before. The spinning dots which showed before hardly can be seen now as the weather app opens when I hit the Lego button :D

After having extolled the greatness of the workaround for KB2770917, I'm taking it all back
The update failed on my second desktop and the workaround did not help......

Me too. The one I use as a Media Center also failed.

After a few installs of win8 (pro and ent) to the eee-pc 900HD (900mhz 1gb ram)and allowing it to update each time, results with no issues updating. So there goes my thought that something on the systems was acting as a bottleneck. That little thing eats the updates like a menopausal woman in a fan shop.

I've been having the same problem as some other peeps here after installing KB2770917, after the restart I'm greeted by a black blinking screen and I'm stuck there (unless I power down or do a hard reset). I've been trying all sorts of things, most of which have been posted here by others.

After restoring a backup I thought the patched theme files might be the problem and I restored the originals and the funny thing is, after a restart I'm greeted by the same flashing black screen. Weird huh... So now I'm thinking my problem is related to my modded theme files... :bangin:

    I used UltraUXThemePatcher to mod the theme files (themeui.dll, uxtheme.dll & uxinit.dll)

After testing lots of theories, I've found a super simple way to replicate the flashing black screen problem.

Simply renames your THEMES folder in Resources to anything. You will once again experience the problem. Only way to fix it use Linux CD, Recovery CMD or System Restore Point.

Apparently Windows 8 doesn't boot with a messed up theme file now? That's pretty lame. I remember Windows 7 booting at LEAST into safe mode with this issue.

I'm now very errie of using Custom Themes... I was using the Windows 8 RP theme before this problem happened - I guess using ANY theme besides stock Metro can cause this issue? Hmm.

All the updates installed at first go. No problems or reverting.

Fixed my blinking black screen problem! Did 2 things, I emptied the Prefetch folder and I installed UXStyle. After that KB2770917 installed without a hitch and no more blinking black screen after the reboot. :) I wonder though which of the 2 actions fixed it?

Does anyone else have fixes for the blinking black screen problem? I have UltraUX theme patcher installed could that be causing it? I haven't tried emptying the Prefetch folder yet. Since I'm running an SSD I disable prefetch and superfetch. Please let me know. I keep having to do a damn system restore :(

Yup it's the patcher, did it to my system too. Did a system restore, set theme back to Windows default, uninstalled the theme patcher. Updated Windows installed and booted fine. reinstalled theme patcher and all is fine now.

Thanks for replying. I tried all that but still got the blinking blank screen. I'll probably end doing a refresh or something. As much as I'd hate to do :(

Installing UXStyle is what solved the problems for me. (I went back and tested it, the prefetch folder does not matter)

Thanks man, uninstalling didn't help. But when manually renaming uxini etc.. from bak back to .dll that did the trick :)

Also had the problem with KB2770917 not installing. Disabling Nalpeiron licensing service helped on one machine. Hope it does on the others also.

Been like that since Vista! That's why I use DISM with 7.

XP's Windows Update is less buggy.
