Multi-OEM/Retail Project {MRP} - Mk3

On my test pc without connection to internet (so no updates) there was no slowdowns noted, but once i connected and updated (mainly for some missing device files) then i noticed some random 'pauses' and general odd things when opening such as the Nvidia control panel and Sound manager. Yet Notepad App, settings etc all was not affected.

At least i know it not MRP itself - just the disabling of defender in general by any methods on w11 may cause this 'sluggish' effect.

*Edited last sentence as was on phone when originally written and looked odd due to some text changes the phone did!*

 

The new Smart App disable option works as i did a test install a while ago on w11, with w10 it did not show the item in Settings>Defender app which i had expected and MRP ignored the option on w10 as it didn't exist in the registry so that it skipped past it. The option is also ignored on any OS below w10 so no chance of any weird behaviour.

Have adjusted the 'Disable Smart App Control' , and 'Disable Defender' options today in MRP 151 RC3 to set that registry section to also be set on w10 too. If the registry section not exist then it may ignore it, but i think it does exist , as i found it in my w10 registry, and so decided to set it as disabled when the user selects either of those options for w10 as well.

 

I think v151 may be the best MRP yet, a lot of internal code updates to cover latest changes in the covered OS's.

But then i am biased i will leave that opinion to you the users of the project.

Trying to sort a odd issue with a 'hung' install that has been reported when using the defender disable option...

In all my test installs everything went ok, i do note that when using the 'remove all apps' options there was a delay of about 5 mins from the last set of spinning dots/line thing to when the GUI part of setup that asks about the language/location then username creation but other than that delay, no hangs or crashes...

I mean if the spinning dots/line thing stops and never moves again after a very long time, it may stop/start and stutter a bit that is usual as it a sort of indicator of things in progress behind the window, if it stops totally and never moves then that should indicate a crash/bsod etc in the background that isn't shown on screen due to that stage of oobe.

Has anyone had a similar 'hung' install when using any previous MRP?

I have not had any reports regarding this until now and only 1 user...

 

I had that error once, but it not appear again.

 

In the next ini creator i have added more information on the disable defender option that will explain what issues could happen for w11 on the msgbox popup when it has been selected.

On windows 10 there is no known issues as far as i know.

As usual all options are just that, the user has to make the call to use which option they wish.

Nothing is forced and I try to explain on each of option's tool tips etc what each one does or what possible issues may happen.

The creator is completed for this release, only spelling or other text updates pending on that part of the project if required.

 

The explorer.exe crash may be because of the expand explorer ribbon and/or the use separate space for explorer. It seems to only rarely happen on w11 installs.

I am thinking it could be the expand ribbon one as w11's explorer is not the same as 22000 or w10's below that build so most likely the culprit because you can't expand it now like before.

I may auto disable the expand ribbon option for 2262x and above.

At nhs exam so sneaked on between candidates.

 

Ok MRP 151 will auto disable the Expand Ribbon (it did before for w11 22h2) and Use Separate process for Explorer.exe when Win 11 22h2 and above is installed.

 

I have read on the net that the explorer.exe fast fault is noted to happen a lot with w11 more so with insider builds, so it may not be those tweaks in MRP but then they not used now on the newer w11 anyway so it not a major loss.

You can still set the explorer.exe to use separate process via the OS anyway so that not a issue as such.

 

For MRP v151 i have added a last minute option for Windows 11:

Prevent BitLocker from auto encrypting your drives during setup. This is experimental and may not work as expected for all systems. It may be better to use the Unattend.xml method to prevent that happening if your tests with this option do not work.

Technically it should as it turns off the auto encryption via registry policy edit and related two services that are set as disabled via the early OOBE stage that is before any user is created.

There was going to be another option added but that will wait until next version (152) as i am still working out the finer parameters for it as it does make a massive difference in how setup completes.

For those wondering what the line 'RunOnce Method of Operation' means, well this is the other option that i am working on. It will be set to the OS's default of 'Synchronous' in MRP v151.

Once i have perfected the options inner code then it will be a selectable option in the next Creator v56.

Basically all RunOnce list of operations in W10 and W11 are run all at once, the old Windows 7 way was to run one at a time down the list. The all at once is to make w1x seem faster at getting to the desktop, BUT in doing so timings can be out so if you have a script to tidy up the scripts folder where your programs are being installed then that script will wipe the folder's contents therefore rendering your list of stuff being installed royally screwed as the files they need are wiped. The new option will allow you to switch back to the older ASynchronous (run in sequence) mode like Windows 7 did, i think win 8.x also was ASynchronous. Now switching it to ASynchronous mode can have some strange side effects in that the desktop, start menu and taskbar plus some theme elements will NOT be shown until the last RunOnce item has completed. You will just see the MRP addon window at first and then once that is done your runonce items will run. I think SetupComplete.cmd is run as normal and not affected by this change.

More testing is needed because you can be stuck at the 'Preparing Windows' screen for a long long time (the default timeout can be up to 30 minutes PER ITEM!!!), i have shortened this timeout down to 5 or 10 seconds from when the last RunOnce command completed. The excessive timeout is due to a possible 'bug' in the OS's Kernel as usual m$ not thought things out properly...
