I am still using 7 Ulti, and want to try out 8.1, but have no experience with it whatsoever. I am downloading this from your Post 1: Windows 8.1 with Update (multiple editions) (x86) - DVD (English) I want to install it on a USB Stick and RUN it from there, not install it yet. Is that possible using a USB Installer on the stick? Is a 4 GB stick big enough? Thanks
What you're describing is similar to Windows to Go, but that's for Enterprise and certain hardware only. I would actually recommend you get a vm program like virtualbox or vmware workstation. Install the OS on that and try it for a while. All vms come with a set of installable tools that will further reduce lagginess. It still wouldn't be nearly as fast as just installing the OS, but at least you'd know if there were any major peeves with the OS before you installed.
Yes, you are right. Both the USB stick and the version I burned to a DVD will install it only, and not let me use it as a trial, as ubuntu does. I installed it in a virtual box, and it works perfectly fine. It asked for an e-mail and would not accept a non-existing account. So I set up a local account, without e-mail. Once installed normally on my HDD, it will ask again, or check any other validation? Will M$ leave me alone with this installation? Thanks for what seems to be a great job...
You can switch it to an online account later if you wish but it will not automatically do it at any time in the future. On some apps like calendar, mail, or others where it needs some sort of social networking, it prompts you to switch to online account if you wish to use. You don't have to use those apps. I usually uninstall all the store apps and just use desktop, personally.
Hi Thanks for this great thread, the helpful links, and responses. If possible, please provide a link to the installation (including activation) instructions? Is it better to use retail or vl version? Is there an entreprise vl version? Thanks.
If possible, please provide a link to the installation instructions to install from the files listed in post #1 of this thread? Thanks. Thanks for the reply above, but post #1 is a sticky, and as of the moment there are no instructions in post #1. Thanks once again. If possible, please provide a link to the appropriate sticky.
OK, then the activation instructions, activation is a part of installation, will have to be googled too.
Thank you (Snake Plisskin) I NEVER register or use any app stores.... Being an unimpotant old fart like me has its advantages, I do not even need to own a mobile phone. I am quite happy spending half an hour on e-mails every day...
Simply downlaod the 8 file you want to use, download the provided fix, inside the fix folder, there is a textfile, it tells you how to proceed. It actually is as easy as it sounds, just did it myself for the very first time....
I'm confused.. can you pls tell me what is the best edition: Windows 8.1 Enterprise Windows 8.1 Enterprise N Windows 8.1 Professional VL Windows 8.1 Professional N VL Thanks..
Best edition is always determined by the features you required. N editions comes without media player. Enterprise editions are for corporate. If you're a home user, simply go for Windows 8.1 Professional VL.
