Best protest song written in the last 10 years written by Iris DeMent who is singing the song above Living in the wasteland of the free... Iris DeMent We got preachers dealing in politics and diamond mines and their speech is growing increasingly unkind They say they are Christ's disciples but they don't look like Jesus to me and it feels like I am living in the wasteland of the free We got politicians running races on corporate cash Now don't tell me they don't turn around and kiss them peoples' ass You may call me old-fashioned but that don't fit my picture of a true democracy and it feels like I am living in the wasteland of the free We got CEO's making two hundred times the workers' pay but they'll fight like hell against raising the minimum wage and If you don't like it, mister, they'll ship your job to some third-world country 'cross the sea and it feels like I am living in the wasteland of the free Living in the wasteland of the free where the poor have now become the enemy Let's blame our troubles on the weak ones Sounds like some kind of Hitler remedy Living in the wasteland of the free We got little kids with guns fighting inner city wars So what do we do, we put these little kids behind prison doors and we call ourselves the advanced civilization that sounds like crap to me and it feels like I am living in the wasteland of the free We got high-school kids running 'round in Calvin Klein and Guess who cannot pass a sixth-grade reading test but if you ask them, they can tell you the name of every crotch on MTV and it feels like I am living in the wasteland of the free We kill for oil, then we throw a party when we win Some guy refuses to fight, and we call that the sin but he's standing up for what he believes in and that seems pretty damned American to me and it feels like I am living in the wasteland of the free Living in the wasteland of the free where the poor have now become the enemy Let's blame our troubles on the weak ones Sounds like some kind of Hitler remedy Living in the wasteland of the free While we sit gloating in our greatness justice is sinking to the bottom of the sea Living in the wasteland of the free Living in the wasteland of the free Living in the wasteland of the free

"Devils & Dust" I got my finger on the trigger But I don't know who to trust When I look into your eyes There's just devils and dust We're a long, long way from home, Bobbie Home's a long, long way from us I feel a dirty wind blowing Devils and dust I got God on my side And I'm just trying to survive What if what you do to survive Kills the things you love Fear's a powerful thing, baby It can turn your heart black you can trust It'll take your God filled soul And fill it with devils and dust Well I dreamed of you last night In a field of blood and stone The blood began to dry The smell began to rise Well I dreamed of you last night, Bobbie In a field of mud and bone Your blood began to dry And the smell began to rise We've got God on our side We're just trying to survive What if what you do to survive Kills the things you love Fear's a powerful thing, baby It'll turn your heart black you can trust It'll take your God filled soul Fill it with devils and dust It'll take your God filled soul Fill it with devils and dust [Harmonica solo] Now every woman and every man They wanna take a righteous stand Find the love that God wills And the faith that He commands I've got my finger on the trigger And tonight faith just ain't enough When I look inside my heart There's just devils and dust Well I've got God on my side And I'm just trying to survive What if what you do to survive Kills the things you love Fear's a dangerous thing It can turn your heart black you can trust It'll take your God filled soul Fill it with devils and dust Yeah it'll take your God filled soul Fill it with devils and dust [Harmonica solo]
Now I'm listening to this song in the fifteenth time in a row .. Especially those transitions of chords: 2:05~2:25, 4:10~4:30 - very beautiful, strong, serious, confident voice .. very wonderful ..
@vogt this next song which I forgot to mention earlier features three of the great "flatpickin" guitar pioneers which is an evolution of "Mountain music"/"bluegrass" genres which started about 1930 .. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Flatpicking Contemporary example
These two guys are two artists (contemporary) who took "Mountain music" in a different direction more "Folk" this is one of my favorite styles Definitely pioneers to "finger picking" modern acoustic steel string guitar with alternate tunnings The sound quality is could be better but you'll get the idea Also noteworthy influences like Jorma kaukonen acoustic guitarist from "Hot Tuna" / "Jefferson Airplane" paved the way for the "finger picking" style to enter The "Rock" scene in the late 60's
For Redroad: - I enjoyed it, I listened to it all 39 minutes.. ____________________ Well.. My turn.. I will try very short.. Boris Grebenshikov & Annie Lennox "The Wind" Boris Grebenshikov = B.G. and his band "Aquarium" - He is one of my friends in Russia.. he has an interesting life history.. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Boris_Grebenshikov http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Aquarium_(group) wiki: - Despite an eventual graduate degree in Applied Mathematics.. my words: the same as my first higher education , maybe it has played the role of friendship.. .. after he graduated from university, he was working in a scientific research institute, but was soon fired because a large number of people gathered around him to listen to songs and guitar after he was fired, he lived as he sang - "from city to city, from flat to flat of unfamiliar people " with his guitar and without money.. but he just did what he had to do .. and time will put everything in its place : wiki: - He is often called as "Grandfather of Russian Rock". wiki: - Perestroika has ushered in a new era of opportunity for rock musicians; several of the more prominent ones got breaks in the West. BG's came from Dave Stewart (of Eurythmics fame). Stewart-produced Radio Silence was released in 1989, featuring covers of Alexander Vertinsky's China amid songs by BG, including a song written to Sir Thomas Malory's Death of King Arthur. Annie Lennox, Billy MacKenzie and Chrissie Hynde helped out, as did several of BG's bandmates from Aquarium.. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Radio_Silence_(Boris_Grebenshchikov_album) - He has lived in the U.S. for about a year and then unexpectedly broke the contract (with Sony Music as I remember), left everything and went back to Russia .. then traveled across the country and sang.. ... Although now I can more often meet him in the US or in Europe during his tour with concerts ... The Albert Hall concert of B.G. : http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_detailpage&v=_MjTJWRYRJY#t=2030s - may try to listen to 1-3 of songs from that time on that link .. *** One of my favorite songs.. The wind.. the fog.. and the snow.. We are alone in this house.. Do not be afraid a knock in the window - this is northern wind came up to me, we are in its hands.. And the northern wind is my friend, It stores everything that is hidden. It will make so, That the sky will be free from clouds where the star Adelaide will rise.. I remember the movement of the lips, I remember the touch of the hands I've heard that time cures all.. But now you can hear the heartbeats - it's plait have found on the rock... And there is no sorrow or evil And I have no pride or pain There is only a northern wind, And it will wake up me there where the star Adelaide will rise.. _______________________________ My congratulations with a thousand pages in this thread .. and this my post under number 10.000 ..
