For those that don't know what redroad is referring to when he says a "leslie"- it's a cool speaker designed to give the Hammond organ a sound similar to the large pipe organs found in churches. It gives the sound a vibrato. The speakers rotate inside the cabinets and the rotation speed is controlled by pedals by the organ player. The Beastie Boys used a Leslie speaker in one of their videos (starting at 2:09 mark): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZdJ5e70Q8mw Jon Lord of Deep Purple used them, but also had his Hammond wired to play through Marshall amps. You can see his Leslies on stage next the bass cabinets in that video I posted earlier: https://forums.mydigitallife.net/th...-music-here!?p=1292910&viewfull=1#post1292910 What I'm curious about is what Jon Lord is doing at the 5:34 mark in that video above that gives his Hammond that scratchy, overdriven sound? He's got a knob on the top upper left of his organ that he's messing with. I don't think that knob is normally found on a Hammond so maybe he had it installed to make that effect? Does anyone know what he's doing to get that sound at that point??
The first keyboard that I ever played was a Hammond Porta-B with a Leslie tone top (I was 13 at the time). There's just nothing like it, and It "sealed the deal" for me as to what instrument I would play for the rest of my life. @PointZero: It's customized. Take a look here: http://www.thehighwaystar.com/rosas/faq/equip/lord.htm
Speaking of Hammonds.. here's a brand new one from Glenn Hughes. He's the bass player in that Deep Purple video (from 1974). He's now 65, but his new album is one of the best rock albums I've heard in a while. Michaela Joy: I envy you that you can play the organ/piano/keyboard (and probably play very well with your experience). I do try to play bass guitar, but have wanted to learn keyboards..
