And a new ".NET framework" emerges, only with more restrictions probably...

First we had "Code Blue" which is a common medical term meaning The patient is dying from cardiac arrest.

Now we are getting "Threshold" which is awfully close to Thresher, the nuclear submarine that sank with a great loss of life.

Is Microsoft hinting that they know their days are numbered? :D

If I was MS, to speed the OS up and to make it smaller, I would drop most of the compatibility versions and only keep it for 8 and 8.1. This part of MS is cool but it takes up space and slows down the OS. I mean for god sakes, who need compatibility for Windows 95 or any 9x version in Windows 7 or 8??

there's no such thing as compatibility for just "8"
compatibility comes with kernel, NT 5, NT 6 ...

and even then some NT 5 apps don't even need compatibility as they are compatible :p
as for 9x, yep those should be ditched

but they shot themself in foot with their .net crap
    compatibility ? oh lord ...
    lets see...

    .net 1.0, 1.1, 2.0, 3.0, 3.5, 4, 4.5

so who ever wants FULL compatibility (and no, installing only v4 won't help you there) has to have all these versions
which is what ? 1 GB more for what ? for their stupid decision to drop win32 programming
which is hilarious considering that .net parts of NT 6 are only tied to MCE and DWM (and those only use .net 2)
and ofc now winblows 8 uses some for metro

then again nobody cares, the rule of today and future is: storage devices becomes bigger so why should we not have bloat ?

Windows 8 and Windows 8.1 in my mind were just insulting for the desktop user and Laptop user. The metro user interface isn't even properly integrated into the Explorer.exe user shell of Windows. Also the RAM usage alone is atrocious. Try going back to the drawing board when you have all the ideas on paper in a more palatable form MS because as much as I like seeing Microsoft squirm this is just painful. It's like watching Magikarp use flail in a serious pokemon match.

that would be bullet in foot
they tried that with Longhorn (win32 shell + .net integration) and look where that took them :whistle3:
(hint: huge memory leaks, unstable system, finally they dropped the idea)

they need 2 separate shells, if we can call it such, win32 and the metro crappy one
this would not only ease problem solution for them, but would ease distribution of diff versions
and would allow users to strip/remove whatever shell they want from their OS, sort of Windows Embedded feature

    mixed is NEVER good

    Love the Magikarp gif haha.

The problem is that Windows 8 uses over 3x the amount of RAM as Windows 7 and that is being kind about it. Also some times I have to restart explorer to get the wireless networking area to even work. Mixing two different shells is never a great idea however in this case its just terrible either do metro or the desktop ui not both.

LOL, you are starting a "official" thread with nothing but rumors on a OS that has not even started coding? :D

Got some bad news for you (and for us, for instead). They are trying to mix everything, like RT, x86/x64 and the phone. All in one. And thats why they talk about the kernel compatibility. In the end would be a monster with a lot of patches with a huge memory hog and slow.
There is not turning back. Like metro but this time with the kernel, they wont turning back to this "idea". Just say goodbye to the old windows platform.

AFAIK the next kernel will be further slimmed down, and will run on 1GB ram. :p

I already made my mind if they don't improve until Win 11
after win7 gives its time out, I'm switching to Linux, prolly Lubuntu or Mint

there's no future in Metro or .net
