I don't understand how you can say this. There are a lot of changes all over the place to separate Windows 8 from Windows 7 beyond the Start Screen, Metro-style apps, etc. It is a known fact that many people said Windows 7 was "Vista done right.". It seems like looking back Windows 7 might end up being a lot more like Vista than Windows 8 will be like Windows 7 and I think that is proving to be true even if we don't include the Start Screen and Metro-style apps.
Basically, price - not features or even applications - will be the deciding factor. However, that doesn't explain iPad2.
You guys waiting to hear from Canouna reminds me of the old E.F. Hutton commercials from the 70's and 80's that said "When E. F. Hutton talks, people listen." A noisy room would screech to a halt to hear what an E.F. Hutton adviser had to say. I appreciate everything Canouna has and is doing, but let's keep perspective and not act like Canouna goes golfing with Steven Sinofsky.
I predict a HUGE success. Metro UI is the most productive and beautiful UI EVER -- for DESKTOP users. It helps get jobs done MUCH faster than the classic UI.
Agreed! I just don't understand the psychology of people! When Microsoft brings a new UI into Windows, they should out loud 'this Metro is s**t', 'Metro sucks' etc etc. And these same people would have said 'hey c'mon MS, why no new UI' if Windows 8 would not have had Metro! In my personal opinion, I like the Metro.. Even though Metro+Aero combo is a bit weird, but I'm not complaining... Who knows, maybe Windows 9 could be full metro! I appreciate changes... Good going MS.
UI/UX changes always been and still taken hard by regular home users. Get in a time machine, go back the 90's. You will see the SAME UI complaints from users, when a change from taskbar-less desktop was occurring (Windows 3.x - Windows 95). Even though the same changes occurred before then (NT3). NT5.0... hmmmm....
Yes, the only problem I have with Windows 8 now is that they have retained the classic desktop. I don't want to use the classic UI on my desktop. I want to use the Metro UI all the time. Right now, the Windows Store is not available in the DP. When the Store opens and Metro apps starts to appear, I'll probably no longer have to use the classic UI anymore. I don't understand why they couldn't make a Metro UI file explorer. Hopefully there will be a third-party Metro file explorer in the Windows Store.
file explorer is the Picker, and its concept is to provide access to files only when it is needed (to insert/send/share/etc....) My Pictures Explorer window, fused with almost all the toolbars from Word 2003.
Microsoft should go Electronic Arts way... EA has two Need For Speed titles under development in parallel... That same should be done with Windows... If MS started work on Windows 8 in 2009, then they should have started Windows 9 development in that same year itself! And by the time Windows 8 will be in use for 3 years (I'm talking about 2014-15), Microsoft could surprise us with a never seen before version of Windows with an entirely new UI (something completely different from Aero and Metro)... Just imagine, what they could have done with Windows in 6 years! They could have rewritten the entire Windows code, got rid of all the two decades old crap that still lies somewhere or the other in Windows... They could have given Windows a second birth! Ya I know it sounds like a fairytale!
I think they do this already! They have started already new OS researches like Singularity and Verve (microkernel based) When the time comes they have something to show! At the moment Windows is good enough. When Virtualization makes a big step forward, than this might become interesting!
