Windows 'codename' 9 did start development around Windows 8 RTM, you're correct. Windows Blue and Windows Threshold were always in the pipeline as updates for Windows 8.x, even with Windows codename 9 in development. Threshold being called Windows 9 has changed the entire plan for Threshold. It was originally supposed to be like Windows 8.1, but since the marketing team told the development team that the next version of Windows needed to be different enough so they could name it something now 8.x related, they had to change their plans. Perhaps Windows 'codename' 9 was originally supposed to be what Threshold is now, or perhaps Windows codename 9 is the cloud-based operating system we know so little about.
Tks Zac, seems you are happy with the new username now. Guess we could know better about the role of Threshold some time later, ATM I don't really wish to discuss too much on it. Btw, AFAIK, win9TP is just M2, so-called "2015 Apr(or about) RTM" is just fantasy - what do you think? Also, I heard some OEM's has 9820, you by some chance has a hands-on?
@Faikee: Let me see if I understand, by what you have seen and read, this is the Threshold of Win8.2 and not the Win9, and that M$ between the lines is delivering Win8.2 by WU-shaped patch updates day. Or would it even misunderstand.
Don't have a hands on of any builds sadly, however I have seen a few builds, latest build I've seen is 9819, however I know that they're close.. if not already passed 983x. And the April RTM thing? Not sure if it will RTM in April, but the idea is that it'll launch in April, so perhaps an RTM will arrive shortly before April. Who knows.
It's going to be highly unlikely that it will be in Windows 9 since we are getting a actual start menu, I don't see the point that they keep in the next version.
win+x key was an unused key on my keyboard times before W8. Keyboard makers obviously knew quite early what to come since now it makes sense edit: even the win key itself was "on the keyboard" and not used by many, no?
There is a rumor Windows 9 may hit the RTM by late December of 2014. If that is true then we are going to see Windows 9 before the planned April 2015 release date.
forget 2014 Dec RTMing that software. We can be happy to see a nice preview during fall and a happy offical springtime-introduction if ever
I don't fully understand the mechanism, but from what I've heard, Threshold Team was responsible to compile win8.2 builds, so it seems if there would be a win8.2, then the build tag would show something like winthreshold(or whatever), like win8.1 build tags showed winblue. I believe MS still haven't decided if there would be "big warp-up" in the form of win8.2, or win8.1 update3 ... too early to speculate. LOL, I heard a rumor that instead of TP, the public release would be a DP, "very slim chance" for Sept, "a maybe" for Oct., then a CP(beta) "maybe next Spring" .... anyway, it's just all rumors. If MS finally decides for no start menu for win9, then there would be a WinX menu, too early to speculate too. LIke Murphy said before, nobody could be sure of anything in software development until they got to the right phase. lmao, WZor is now just some click-bait factory.
So you reckon Threshold is following the same route as Windows 8 did? RTM around Aug/Sept? Definitely sounds plausible, but I haven't heard that this is the case. Still, if Microsoft decide to make Threshold an even bigger release, this could definitely happen.
I agree with you. Indeed, I take it with a pinch of salt the RTM would be released by December of 2014 by online sources. Notwithstanding, I read the Windows 9 preview might as well get leaked before September 30. Microsoft being highly security conscious this time around is not going to allow that to happen and it is a very good thing to do. Which means we aren't going to see the preview until the press release date of September 30th.
The watermark for Threshold has been updated again, build number has climbed by a couple digits as well.
