If that's true, then I'll be very interested in W10....

Aero never went anywhere. It is on Win8 as well.
I think you're talking about aero glass.
Also, aero glass is not like the picture above. Aero glass has a frosted look.

I tried every "hack" under the sun to get Aero back and none of them ever worked reliably nor did they give me the experience that I personally liked - every time it was back to W7.

Again, my personal opinion, but they took Aero out and that hurt the desktop interface. I've seen shots of 3yr old *nix desktops that looked 1000% better than anything I ever saw under W8.

That's like driving a different car because it's red.
Do you care nothing about what's under the hood?

I do care....but if W7 works, and runs all my apps, why can't I have something that looks good as well.

Do you just throw away a old car because a new one has a different look?

You missed the point and essentially did a "I know you are but what am I?"
The point is that win8.x uses the newer hardware more efficiently and will run much faster overall than win7.
It's a little strange because it's not quite as responsive, but its caching and multi-threading makes short work out of multi-tasking and most system functions.

If you have older hardware though, you won't get any benefit from using win8.x unless you like the store apps.

    I didn't miss the point....

My point was why change a look that works? They could of done an engine upgrade and kept the body - like they do a lot of the time already - and instead they not only upgraded the engine, but made it fugly as well. For some people, all it takes is a fugly look and they'll stay away, regardless of the engine.

Looks can be just as important as function.

My hardware ran just a fine under W8 as it does W7 (i7 2.6g, 6g ram, SSD, multiple HD, etc etc) - but it looks like s**t under W8...what compelling reason do I have then to spend the money to upgrade if to me the newer model looks like s**t?

That's basically what hardware based encryption is.
Didn't they start using something like that with newer systems?
I seem to remember CODYQX4 calling it evil or something haha.

See, if you have a hardware based encryption, all the NSA needs to know is how the hardware works.
If you use software, you can randomize it, which is the whole point of encrypting something.

    To each his own man...
You definitely aren't alone in thinking that Win8 is ugly.
I think most hardcore users hate the modern UI.
I personally never see it. I boot straight to desktop and have stuff linked there.
I never use the start button.

I can see why people like the win7 aero glass. I did think that was good looking.
I like win8's theme about the same though..

that's what I say too, UEFI, SSL, IME and an UEFI-module linked into framebuffer is already enough to observe
no more need for an OS which opens backdoors

Whoever made that Word UI is a dumb ass, sorry, it looks ugly, did a 10 years old design the concept for this? I'm quite serious what are they thinking. otherwise the rest looks fine, I would love to see "Aero Glass" and Gadgets back, hopefully Google Keep Notes ? Lol, OH AND BRING BACK THE COLORED START BUTTON FLAG, This current one looks flat out UGLY! :weeping:

    Couldn't have said it better...

By the way? Why shove 10 Immediately, I like it but it doesnt make sense, just because its 10? where is 9?
