It uses a retail windows 8 key so if you have windows 8 you have a key for 8.1 he just installed with windows 8 key (or a friend did). It will activate just the same after install if connected to net.
I doubt it's KMS v6. He's probably using a volumeMAK or simply used his 8.0 key on the web servers...

if you do the free upgrade through the store from 8 to 8.1, I assume it will activate with no issues. I doubt a fresh install would work the same. But time will tell soon enough.

Yes, you can even activate using Free WMC key by making a PROWMC ISO using Windows 8.1 PRO. (you might need to phone activation first time you do this if it is a clean install, unless you use your own data.dat from an upgraded windows 8 - 8.1). The best thing to do.. Upgrade Windows 8 Pro with WMC to Windows 8.1 with WMC (Just click upgrade when you have the 8.1 ISO) Then once installed you will be activated so copy the data.dat and make a ProWMC with that data.dat and the Windows 8.1 ISO. Now ever time this is installed on that machine you can install it with your free WMC key and it will activate when reaching desktop if online. If you make PROWMC 8.1 ISO using someone else's data.dat or use the ISO you made from one machine data.dat it won't activate on another machine you will have to use phone activation the first time. So yeah best thing to do upgrade / make prowmc and then install with that whenever you feel the need. Worst case skype Microsoft for activation. Hope this clears things up.. Oh if you have a currently activated Windows 8 using a KMS key it won't be activated after installing 8.1 as an update. It also won't activate using the AutoKMS script you use. KMS = No Go (untill a new KMS key is leaked) Mak = If not blocked phone activation will work WMC = using own data.dat form upgraded w8 work on login if someone else data.dat then activate via phone (this is with a PROWMC ISO but for 8.1) WMC upgrade key (not using PROWMC) = Install 8.1 activate using your windows 8 key then click add features in 8.1 and enter WMC key. Retail key = No problem just enter it when installing OEM key = No problem just enter it when installing (you wont have to most the time as its stored in bios)
