Still searching, Using Fx ESR 45.9.0 for those few times I need a browser on those machines. Retrozilla also works but isn't by any means "safe".
Well, outdated browsers’ unsafeness is a kind of “virtual” problem with somewhat mythical and mystical smell. If one doesn't go to view the “stinky” web pages (i.e. so-called warez, porno and so on) then there is a very little to nothing to fear. The true and perhaps more evident drawback with that old browsers in todays WWW is the lack of some modern multimedia, if it really matters for you. Personally, I don't worry about it. There are a plenty of multimedia players for any OS and each of them is much better for multimedia then browser.
The biggie IMO is getting YT videos to play. Sometime back I'd found a standalone player that worked fine on XP & would accept YT URLs, but it quit working. Mostly I use a variation of KMeleon. YT stuff is spotty with that & lots of 'em just refuse to play altogether. Really, that is the biggest problem with any 'older' browser for me & if it could be solved simply then the rest is all good for me. (I don't bother with 'stinky' sites as was mentioned so wisely earlier - and that is very good advice !!)
@smallhagrid I agree completely. Not being able to play YouTube videos is a deal breaker for me. I moved on to Vista because of that reason. Now Firefox ESR is ending support in June. Once the YouTube videos stop playing, I'll be moving on to Windows 7.
XP was my final M$ OS. My main OS now is Ubuntu Mate set to look like a classic, plain desktop. I do run XP in a VM as there are apps I prefer that work very, very well that way. I also have a VM of win2kpro that I'll finish getting debugged one of these days - and that is my all-time favourite as it is the most stable of the lot.
Hrmph - if you say so. I'm using it & it has some funny foibles - but is working under XP SP2 flawlessly. Resource hogginess ?? Nope, not here - it is very slim & light & fast for me. Sure - it is not perfect & I'm OK with that in anything that calls itself 'RC8'. Best of all - they are totally open & honest about it being a work in progress.
1. On my PC, RC8 simply can’t pass the Acid 3 test and immediately dies. Sad but true. 2. It tries to look like an Opera Presto, but it’s definitely not an Opera Presto in sence of speed, stability, reliability and so on. Perhaps it will be better in the future.
I've been using Mypal since seeing this: And it is absolutely delightful IMO. That & K-Meleon running simultaneously with many tabs open in both - together, still use less resources than Vivaldi uses with just a couple of tabs open. Between those 2 options, they mostly do all that I require (99%+) - and for really browser fussy sites I can use Firefox under Ubuntu (but it -is- just yuck IMO...). Despite being able to use Thunderbird in a newer version via Ubuntu - I still prefer the portable version of it under XP for its simplicity.
