[Not working anymore] How to upgrade from W7/8.1 without going through the complete upgrade process

The laptop was never connected to the internet after installation.

I went from W7 Ultimate to W10 Pro.

Could this be the problem?

 

That upgrade path is fine, I'll just leave it as is and try to just let it autoactivate by the morning.

 

Yes you should connect to internet to get activated.

 

So I should copy the genuineticket.xml to the specified file location, then reboot and then let it connect to the internet to get activated?

Also after rebooting the genuineticket.xml was longer in the specified file location. Is this normal?

Activation Successful after clean Install !!

Recently, I upgrade one of my Laptop from Windows 7 pro to Windows 10 pro through normal upgrade procedure and found that during installation the GenuineTicket.xml file was created in C:\Windows\Panther\ as well as C:\$Windows.~BT\Windows\Panther\ folder and not in the C:\programdata\microsoft\windows\clipsvc\genuineticket\ as mentioned in the OP. The installation was done offline by extracting the ISO to as folder on the HDD.

After installation completed - I connected to internet and the system got activated immediately but the GenuineTicket.xml is still present in the C:Windows\Panther\ folder.

Is it normal?

Will it re-activate after a clean install - even if I don't create a Microsoft account on this system? or M$ Account is necessary for preserving activation?

Updated for Information : I reformatted and clean Installed twice after a gap of 7-10 days and it activated within seconds when I connected internet after full install along with all drivers.

I did it to a windows 7 professional using slic 2.1 method, but after reboot doesn' t activated, the ticket wasn' t where I put it, simply it' s gone after reboot.I copy it again, and this time windows activated.

From Blank HDDs to Clean 7SP1 to Clean 10, yes and it's easy!!

I just did the following steps in order to set up a PC "from scratch" or in other words, start with BLANK hard drives and go from a CLEAN 7SP1 install to a CLEAN 10 install (I did 7 Pro to 10 Pro). I wanted to see how much effort would have to be put into the "7 from scratch" just to generate the GenuineTicket.xml and then Clean install 10.
PC: Dell XPS 8500, so it already has SLIC 2.1 in the BIOS. Other posts in MDL confirm this works with a SLIC modded BIOS, however you Activate your 7 is fine.

1. Installed 7 Pro with SP1 from original 64-bit DVD, skip product code etc.
2. Downloaded & Installed Dell Ethernet drivers (Downloaded on another computer, copied to USB drive, installed on XPS8500) because this is one of those Dell's that doesn't come up in 7 with Ethernet already working.
3. Activated 7 with slmgr -ilc dell.xrm-ms and slmgr -ipk (7 Pro Key). Verified Computer, Properties showed Activated/Genuine.
4. TRIED to visit windows.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/genuine which wanted to download WindowsActivationUpdate.exe so I did, and Ran that. It did things for a while but then failed. Same result opening legitcheck.hta directly.
5. Ran gatherosstate.exe and it did generate a GenuineTicket.xml. Copied the GenuineTicket.xml to a safe place.
6. Figured what the heck, so far it wasn't much work on the 7 part so far... I was worried that this might not work because I HAD NOT DONE A SINGLE WINDOWS UPDATE, Seriously, not one, this was a virgin 7SP1 install on its first boot after finishing the 7 install.
So I popped in the Windows 10 Pro USB I made with the Media Creation Tool from microsoft.com/en-us/software-download/windows10 and rebooted and poked F12 over and over until I could choose to boot from USB. If you're not on a Dell, this process may vary for you, or you may use a DVD etc.
7. Chose a custom install, deleted all the partitions, then let it do its install process on the blank partition. Skipped when asked for product key. etc.
8. After Windows 10 finished installing, I verified it had network connectivity but didn't ask it to run updates or anything.
9. I did a Reboot and unplugged the network cord as soon as it showed BIOS screen.
10. When 10 was booted without network plugged in, I copied GenuineTicket.xml to C:\programdata\microsoft\windows\clipsvc\genuineticket\ (it asked for Admin YES prompt, FYI)
11. Rebooted. Plugged in network cord as soon as it showed BIOS screen.
12. When 10 was booted, I let it sit a good minute or two, then right clicked Computer, Properties. It shows Activated!!!!

The point is, it is not a great deal of effort to load 7SP1 just to generate the GenuineTicket.xml because you don't actually have to let 7SP1 sit and go through hours and Terrabytes and updates and reboots, I did it all right off a stock 7SP1 install with NO updates. This should work with anything you can SLIC Activate/Genuine 7SP1, and is worth the effort so you aren't burning good 10 keys while M$ is giving out free "Upgrade" activations. Save your keys until after they stop giving it away

 

Guys, the online activation doesnt seem to load for me. Ive tested first in a pc running mstoolkit. Then I teested in a surface pro. Doesnt work. Both running latest windows 8.1.

Did microsoft kill it so people wouldnt do this trick?

Also, do I really need to validate it online or as long as I was granted the free update with gwx, Im all set?

 

Had to upgrade two fresh systems to 10 and wanted to do this fast and clean. Had only a license for 7.

0. since this is a ASRock Z170M-ITX/ac and W7 refused to install, I ran the install process until first reboot on another system and swapped the drives
1. installed fresh W7 and activated online, no updates no nothing.
2. generated GenuineTicket.xml by running gatherosstate.exe - this will only work when your OS is activated anyway
3. installed W10, deleting all old partitions on the drive.
4. copied GenuineTicket.xml to C:\programdata\microsoft\windows\clipsvc\genuineticket\
5. restart Client Licensing Service (ClipCVS) - the XML file disappears from the genuineticket folder
6. opened CMD prompt, ran "slmgr -ato" - activated

The system was all the time connected to the internet.

 

My system did not go through the online activation thingy. It's activated using MTK. I was able to generate the gatherosstate.exe though. Does that mean Im good to go?

Activation server determined the specified product key has been blocked.

What to do? My pc was ready for win10 upgrade via gwx though.

 

I'm already on Windows 10 Home but want Pro version. Can I just create another partition on the same hard drive with 60GB of space and install Windows 7 Ultimate. Use this method without going through the complete upgrade process and then swap hard drive to SSD where I will install windows 10 pro?
