    Hello AnarethoS

I have a Sony VAIO laptop with pre-configured recovery partition and system partition.I want to only capture the image(.wim file)of these two partition, but not the image of Windows partition which I will install from a bootable win 7 DVD, and apply it to the destination computer by the following methods as given by microsoft
    1.Generalising computer
2.Capturing image using DISM (recovery.wim and system.wim)(only these two partitions I want to capture)
    3.Applying it to destination computer.
I want to know, Is there any steps I fogot to do or else it will create a problem ?Will it work on the destination computer without arrousing any problem providing reference computer and the destination computer is one?

I think in this type of situation HBCD or Acronics is the best tool who can capture the image as u required ... Further help AnarethoS give you

Acronis use to have a so called universal restore but never did work well and now they have dropped it in the new version. If using image in another machine that isnt the same will result in failure I am afraid. You cannnot use image in another comp without the same hardware. Not to mention it wont be activated even if it did some how. Would just image the other comp and call it done on both.

Also if goin to use Acronis in win 7 then make sure to add reg entry or every three days you will get a mbr error 3.....windows by default defrags the boot area which Acronis uses for their f11 function to enter recovery. If not using the f11 function then no need to add reg entry. Took 4 months to find this answer that works.

Hi all. Background: I am putting together a PC to send to a relative in another country, and one they receive it they have little or no internet access or IT support options. I am trying to ensure that they have every recovery option possible just in case anything goes wrong. The PC is brand new, and only has 1 drive, it came with Win 7 and it's Acer recovery partition etc, but I want to use Windows 8.

I'm using 1.3.13, and I have successfully installed Win 8 on the laptop and created a recovery partition. I can recover via a reset and refresh from within the Windows 8 installation - both tested working. This provides all the recovery options they need except for the case of a a dead or totally ruined hard drive config, so for these scenarios I have created a USB recovery drive, but from it I have the following issues:

    1) System restore doesn't work - Not really an issue, if the OS is so borked that the on-drive recovery tools where this does work won't work then it's no use from USB either.
    2) Refresh doesn't work - It complains the drive is locked - possibly not a problem, because chances are there is no OS to refresh if it's being used
    3) Reset goes through the motions (if I tell it to repartition the drives, if I tell it to keep the existing partitions it complains a partition is missing...), but on reboot I get the message "An operating system was not found". Going into a command prompt and using diskpart seems show the recovery took place OK.

I'm using a stock config, other than putting the product key into the autounattend, and also forcing the showgui after the disk config as I need to load a custom driver before install.

Any clues how to get the USB drive working?

    @Satya318

Remeber it is the holiday season and some of us are busy with real life. I am sure he would help u if he had the time. Lets not be so demanding please.
As far as u wanting to keep your oem recovery that came with your comp just install win7 ult and goto manfacture web site and get the drivers and tools you need from them so you can enter back into ur original oem recovery ( or use your oem recovery disk which you should have made when you first got your machine).....I did this with my dell lappy until the warrenty wore off. Now I created my own recovery with what I wanted since I have no warrenty anymore. The manufacture of your comp will have those tools and drivers which you are needing....I know dell does....you might have to search their site though so it does require some reading. Just trying to help.

Now win8 is here and I am going through this process again. Everything works fine and I was able to create, refresh, reset.
but I have not figure out how to make the usb media. How do I run the usb media creator? I have been going through the forum and couldn't find a clear answer.

thanks, a simple search found it. I recommend spell it out with some images in the manual to help those less technical and clumsier ppl like myself. I can help to create that portion if needed.

Now everything is tested. I need an actual test. A way to crash the Windows 8 such that it will force the advance boot restore option to appear. I have not found a way to access that other than from Windows 8 settings. Anyone has idea how to test an actual crash (perhaps a sure fire way to crash windows8 such that it will not successfully boot and force out the restore option) thanks
