    Hi
    Just purchased a new Laptop with Windows 8 but have Office 2007 disc from my old machine. I have loaded Office 2007 on to my new machine as i do not want to purchase Office 2010 and transferred all my documents over to new Laptop but they are saved as a DOCX file and not WORD. Excel files are ok. I have found if i right click on the document and select, open with WORD, it is ok but bit of a pain. Any views?
    Thanks

    Do you really believe, that someone will waste his time to help you when coming here the first day and acting like the big boss? You better go there where you came from and ask other people and not bother this forum with useless questions. period :eek:

    right click one of the files and click properties. Once the dialog opens, click "Change" and change it to the program you want. Apply and Save, now that filetype will always open in the program you set.

    @CULLOTY:

    1. Go to the Desktop
    2. Open Desktop Control Panel
    3. Open Windows Update
    4. At the bottom of the WU page set it to receive updates for all Microsoft products.
    5. Accept the agreement for Microsoft Update
    6. Check for updates
    7. Download and install updates for Office 2007

    Now Office 2007 will open .docx files created in Office 2010.

    Rather than find the Default Programs setup in Control Panel, simply right-click on the .docx file you are attempting to open and select "Open With". You'll then see a submenu and a choice called "Set Default Program". Once you choose that some programs will be shown, if you see Word in this group, select it, if not browse out to where you installed Office (C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Office12\) and select "WINWORD.exe" and check off "Always use the selected program to open......" and you'll be all set!!!!

    Also, this piece of advice is very good to follow as Windows Updates are indeed important, especially with Office 2007 which has a ton of them....

    Working in the IT field since the early 80's, I too have had my share of inexperienced users and it can be annoying, but slamming everyone who is not a computer genius is not winning you friends around these parts. While there may be no issue with Office 2007 opening Office 2010 files or not, the fact remains that eyedee was only trying to help and his suggestion to do Windows Updates is relevent, especially with Office 2007, which is when MS added the .docx extension. Looking at my WSUS server here, it looks as if Office 2007 has almost as much patches for it as Office 2003.......

    I can see you mean well vymrdal, What I would suggest the user do optimally is to uninstall that Office 2007 version completely, reboot, then look around MDL or other and get yourself a copy of Office 2010 and the EZ Activator as it is an easy solution to put in play and install this on your computer. If you are firm on using Office 2007, I imagine the VL version with license key is still out there to acquire. Good luck!!!!
