hello firstly thanks so much for this great solution. it's been working in a lot of my friends' computers. I heard from one of my friends that the latest update to Microsoft Security Essentials detects RemoveWAT and lists the windows as non-genuine. Has anyone else experienced this problem? I am avoiding the update at the moment.
EDIT: same as artix above Is RemoveWAT failing for other people with today's update? The MSE Update is reporting invalid status in my VM and laptop, saying it will shutdown in 30 days. The rest of the system seems fine, however if MSE knows, it will only be a matter of time. I think I updated with KB1033 in my VM, but I haven't with one of my laptops, and it is showing the same dialog box.
Yes, RWAT fails at this update. Also Chew 0.9. Seems like they used the MSE-Update as a backdoor to put the unliked KB971033 on the system. Or parts of it, maybe. Do yourself a favor and deinstall MSE for now and place another AV solution on your deck. Until this is solved. I did so - and by now i experienced no nags or invalid status dialog boxes.
Interesting, I haven't installed the updates yet on my desktop (that doesn't have MSE installed, so should be OK), and today's updates are working fine with another laptop with SLIC2.1, no probs there. I'm just wondering if it is just MSE reporting invalid, or if it will spread to the rest of the system soon. I'm going to try remove MSE from the other laptop and VM now, and replace with something else, probably avira like my desktop.
I believe it was tpday's MSE update KB972696. Just removed MSE from the affected laptop, replaced with Avira and no nag screens as of yet, fingers crossed. Main desktop that is running Avira and was never running MSE has no nag screens as of yet. I will play around with the VM later, see what happens. I know that definitely has the evil KB1033 and MSE installed. This netbook has MSE installed but with a hacked SLIC2.1, and so far no ill effects, so irrelevant for this thread.
I know about KB971033, just uninstalled that. Don't know how it got installed, but it seems like the guys are talking bout another update?
It's not safe to use coz it uses patched dll from rtm, btw update to final version of windows 7 and forget about rc
Much appreciated. Just came across the post about the use of pre RTM Edited to add: It seems the RTM torrents pointed to by Hazar in the post are no longer hosted.
Many Thanx just used on build 7600 after getting caught with the KB971033 update, no more nags, no watermark, I have turned off updates for the moment
All this noise and hatred of the poor patch KB971033 makes no sense to me! I installed the RTM, then all the updates available till 6 days ago (KB971033 was just one of them). I had no idea MS was after those keys, one of which I have used unfortunately. My installation went kaput with loss of bgroung and a weird change in the system sounds. And of course the not gen.... notification too. I have this habit of cleaning the system thoroughly once I put ALL the available updates (I clean EVERYTHING, including wiping out restore points and what not; my obsession with complete cleaning is to reduce the footprint, of course. The cleaned system is put away in a secure image. Once the notifications showed up, I went berserk and applied just about every patch and tool out there, with not much help! Then wiped the partition, reformat and put the image back; by now I knew the dreaded KB971033 must have done stuff but I have no recourse to its removal since I killed ALL restore points before imaging! I got nothing lose (but return to XP) now so I went about applying one patch at a time and seeing what happens; ALL other patches were beat down; none of them worked.... until Maestro Hazar's Remove the friggin WAT was applied (one of those 2.2s)... System is rock stable now. What did the trick? Well, it is not for nothing I call myself a DumTechie... I have no clue; Anyways, hats off to Hazar; he done something right. if I were him, I wouldn't elaborate on the logic behind the patch... If he explains too much by way of how and why that patch works, you are helping shorten the life of the patch by doing so...
