That is stragne i can overclock my Q6600 to 3.7ghz on 2x2gb DDR2 800mhz memory (Ibt stabil) Have you tried to run memtest?
Thats weird. I have ddr2 800mhz ram as well. G skill 4x1gb sticks. What method are you trying to overclock by? Messing with settings in bios or tape mod? Im not geeky enough to mess with bios settings, nor have an adequate bios which would allow such, so i had no choice but to do the tape mod. Pretty idiot proof and simple for me to get it done. lol ROBALM- Why did you get rid of your corsair? U better have a good reason too, that thing is a BEAST!!
I oc through the bios, personally not too keen on messing with my cpu althuogh i can understand why people use the tape mod. 2 weeks ago i had 2gb of Hyundai ram (2x1gb 533mhz) and i was overclocked to 3.0ghz multiplier = 9 core clock = 333 cpu vcore = 1.27 v all other settings left on auto. Now though with the new hyperx ram, 2 x 2gb ddr2 800mhz. No dice. As soon as i try to go over 2.4ghz machine wont boot and loads fail safe settings.
Update. Im now back at 3.0ghz after alot of tweaking. Dram voltage now at 2.0 volts. Ram running at 833mhz, vcore 1.285 volts. At least its a start.
Alex, you trying to murder your system? Overvolting the RAM is not the solution! It'll be dead if you keep on that way, What's happening is your raising the FSB speed of your system, which in turn is overclocking the RAM beyond its rated speed and stopping it posting when you overclocked it even marginally. Thing is, FSB overclocking is the only thing you can do on your Q6600 as far as I'm aware, as it has a locked multiplier. So what you do is, set the RAM frequency to half (remember in the BIOS, RAM speeds are double pumped, 400mhz = 800, 333 = 667 etc.) so set your RAM speed to 333, then crank up the FSB from there. You'll be OC'ing the CPU whilst raising the RAM back up to its original frequency Enjoy!
Thanks Hazar. Perhaps i wasnt being clear. My ram is only running 33mhz over its rated speed of 800mhz which as you said is double pumped from 400mhz. The main part of my oc ive done as you said by raising fsb from 266 x 9 to 333 x 9. Also i have multiplier option from 6 to 9. I was under the impression that Kingston Hyperx was good ram for OC-ing but please do correct me if im wrong as i ccertainly dont want a fried system. TIA
You'll be wanting to set the RAMs lower then crank up the FSB till they're back at their rated speed again, and then work with the multi there. 800mhz RAM is always poor at OCing as it wasn't good enough to be binned as 1066mhz RAM
My 800mhz memory is just fine, i have overklocked a e8500 to 4.27ghz on my 800mhz memory and now my Q6600 to 3.68ghz.
robalm- dnt mean to keep pestering u, but 2day, i checked my intelburn test results again, and temps were (last 2 cores) 33 & (first 2 cores) 38C. It appears its getting better by the day. U sure u dont want to buy the corsair back from your friend? Trade him the Noctua instead?
And both my graphics cards! It's really the amperage that counts Canouna. Get a Corsair or OCZ PSU, not an Enermax
I agree, Never cheap out on the PS, plan for it to last 3 or 4 years and insure it will be big enough for any upgrades in that time. I have a slightly dates Corsair 550 W that works great and is very quiet.
