Don't muck about. Use WSUS Offline update. Read up about it. I had all the annoyance with Windows Update not being willing to check for updates , but after using WSUS to get my W7 up to date, even Windows update itself now works.

There is an option in WSUS to exclude any updates that you don't want (if you know the numbers) from being downloaded, or they can be downloaded but not installed.

this was a dell laptop and dell disc, legally activated and searching for all the updates,
WU should do it's job in my opinion if microsoft did not intervene in this procedure.
yes other ways are possible, but ..

Yea and next month there will be a new Update fix....... and the beat goes on!!

Right now I have kb3161664 installed on 2 Win7 installations. Both take less than 60 seconds to go through.

Last month I had kb3153199 installed on the same 2 installations and on June 13 2016 one took 48 seconds to get through and the other to 1 min 9 seconds to get through. Then came June 14 2016, Patch Tue. Neither would go through after hours of searching. June 15 still nothing goes through???? Found out about the KB311664 update. Downloaded and installed and Bingo new updates in under 5 min.

Now I fully expect that the kb3161664 update that I have installed and working great right now will be totally useless next patch Tue.

Now there is a new one again in the Rollup. KB3161647. But this is just in the Rollup. Can't download this from the Update Catalog it's not there?? It will probably appear next patch Tue. and probably be offered when you check for updates with windows update.

But now hear is the problem that I see. Most people out there running Win7 probably know nothing of what is going on. They just keep checking for updates. After Days of trying it finally goes through and Great............. they get the new update fix. A little late for that is it not?? And this update fix will probably be useless by next patch Tue.

Thus the beat goes on. Do you think that this will piss people off?? I Think M$ thinks it will.

Some proved that installing KB3161608 only will solve the long search issue

KB3161647 is just a KB article to describe WU client improvement in KB3161608

nonetheless, waiting next patch tuesday to see if this fix persist
    why the early rant? :D

Just an old guy getting frustrated with this update bull.

Why does kb3153199 work perfectly fine the day before patch Tue. and the next day it no longer works?? What happened?? My auto updates are turned off and I update manually on Patch Tue. Nothing has changed on my computer??

I found out about the update kb3161664 from my cousin when she sent me her list of updates for this month to check. It took her 2 days to get through Windows update. 2 Days to get through and then see a fix is offered?? A little late is it not?? After downloading and installing kb3161664 on my computer I finally got through quite fast.

This seems to be an on going thing with M$. New fix's just about every patch Tue. Now we have not made it through this month and again another fix KB3161608???

Right now I have kb3161664 installed and it works just fine. Get's through in under a min. We will see what happens next Patch Tue. If it does not then I will install KB3161608:confused:

    kb3153199/kb3161664 are temporary fix
and afaik, this fix was not effective months ago (i mean one could install latest win32k.sys and yet WU still not fast)

it appears that there were a bug in wuaueng.dll which is somehow linked to win32k.sys
but now this deadlock is fixed in latest WU components, and win32k.sys not needed

A simple test I do prove for MY SYSTEM that unfortunatelly the long search will remain.
My system (W7) was completely updated (except W10 and telemetry nags) until may patch tue. This patch tue (jun) the search takes 45 minutes, some way better than others previous months that average was beetween 01:40:00 and 02:10:00 - except last (may) that was next to 08 hours.
I selected and left the install of optional 3161608 (that includes the 3161647) together with al other security suggested updates. After system completely updated with this month all updates I do a new search and it takes next to 10 min. (the normal for this computer).
Then I tried doing the following:
    1) My updates services are turned off as always was. When I want I do a manual update.
    2) stop WU services (net stop wuauserv).
    3) temporary saved datastore.edb (near 570MB) in other folder.
    4) deleted the datastor.edb file.
    5) deleted all in SoftwareDistribution\Download folder.
    6) restarted WU services (net start wuauserv).
    7) Now started a manual update. After 05 hours without any success :mat: I aborted (net stop wuauserv) and verifyed that:
    - it was created a new datastore.edb (near to 8MB only).
    - the SoftwareDistribution\Download folder continues empty (none file or folder there).
    8) deleted the new created datastore.edb and restored the old saved one (540MB).
    9) restarted WU services (net start wuauserv).
    10) Redone a manual update. Now becomed normal again  - takes almost 15 minutes to concludes the search but because the system is updated already nothing more was suggested.
    Conclusion:
May be I am wrong but I think if I only install this 3161608 (and its prerequisites) in a new clean install of w7SP1 the search will be too long.

Unfortunatelly to us I think it will not persist. The case is as it was already happenning for a long: temporary solved after applied the month updates, then works until the previous day of the next month patch tue.

The KB3161608 june 2016 update rollup fix still works on all my Win7 SP1 machines as of this Tuesday July 12.

Too bad Windows Vista users have it much worse than Win7 users - the KB3161664 fixes no longer work and require the KB3168965 updates which supersede the KB3161664 updates and still using the outdated Windows Update Agent v7.6.7600.256 dated 6/2/2012.
