today I noticed that when the progress bar is still progressing, if I hoover over the field name I see a legend that says "computing filters"

anyone knows what is this? can it be disabled?

it seems it comes and goes, is there a way of getting a report from this service? I mean what codec is triggering it?

It should get mentioned in the events log, under applications.
U could check there for the error code.

subscribed . i have the same issue no codec pack installed i'm still dual booting and use my XP more . i thought it was just my old PC couldn't run 7 properly.but
now that i read this thread. maybe not .

my windows eperince index is 3.9 runs windows 7 fine .

i too experience the slow load as Soretito described . that is my biggest reason for not completely upgrading to windows 7 , i would love to get this figured out then i would most likely not keep my PC as a dual boot machine.
i have the latest drivers installed .

mine comes and goes also. more evident in the first 5 mins of using the machine

A couple things cross my mind, and it isn't really clear at all.

First off, it could have something to do with Superfetch. Now that u mention it being more evident just after booting, Superftech just popped into my head. Try setting to cache bootfiles only :

    HKLM\System\CurrentControlSet\Control\SessionManager\MemoryManagement\PrefetchParameters

"EnableSuperfetch" is at default value "3" (cache boot & applications)

    set it at value "2"

Another things that is known is the fact that XP UI is way faster than Win7's UI. That's because Win7 uses 2d accelleration, and there is a problem with wddm compatibility, resulting in a slow performance of win7 UI.
But that's a graphical issue, and don't honestly think it has anything to do with this.

I'm really brainstorming here. Try the superfetch setting. It may be the cause.

    superfetch setting did not help.

Can this be related due to windows reading the exif data of the photos?
