1) No, only need to be run if update has altered ntoskrnl or winload. The only problem that I have had is for the September update. I just reran the second half of @Jan1 procedure and all was OK. 2) Always make sure you have backed up your data before you do an Update Tuesday. Then if you can't recover you still have your data. 3) It was an old system that was sitting unused so I installed a patched Windows 8.1 CSL from ESD file just to see if I could accomplish it. It doesn't run any programs other then a MTK activated Office 2013.
how would I revise these steps to allow me to upgrade Win7 64bit to Win8.1 64bit without a fresh install?
My main reason for wanting to upgrade is my son uses steam and have downloaded gigs upon gigs of games that we will have to redownload if I clear the files from his drive. He likes Windows8.1 better than Win7 and I must admit I like it better too, I used to like Win7 until I got used to Win8.1. he sold his Laptop and got this machine with a cpu of Intel Pentium (R) D 2.80GHz that has everything except LAHF/SAHF and PreFetchW support. It runs Win8.1 32bit but the 32bit wont support all the RAM, he has 8GB of RAM.
that is what I needed. I will see what I have to do to reload his machine and backup the files so we dont have to redownload.

Thank you but I'm having another problem. I'm attempting to install windows 8.1 on my notebook without NX. I follow any steps of the guide but when i click on Remove SSE2 and NX check it open up the explorer to browse to the file ntoskrnl.exe. I browse to System32\ntoskrnl.exe and click open but it give me an error sayng "patch failed: patch location not found". Where am I wrong? Thanks Edit: i was using an AIO install.wim. I changed it and now it works!
Hi folks, You guys are a little more advanced in the nuts and bolts then me of windows and I am not sure the answer to this after looking through this thread. I have a Asus A8N-SLI Deluxe Mother Board and a AMD Athlon 64 X2 Dual Core 4400+ I am currently running Win8 and I run into the the CompareExchange128 problem when trying to upgrade to W8.1 I updated my bios with 1805 from asus and it has had no affect. Can I use your method to upgrade to W8.1? If so has someone written some idiot proof instructions on how to do this? I have been working with computers for a long time, program several languages among other things; but, this stuff you have been doing is off my level and I would appreciate any help that you can offer Thanks folks Andy
I tried to install Windows 8.1 from the newest ISO (which includes the November update aka Update 3) and only can patch ntoskrnl.exe, when try to patch winload.exe it says "patch location not found", so can't bypass signature check and boot fails. If it does matter, I'm installing the Spanish version.
Alright, so I want to install Windows 8 on some ancient machine without SSE2/NX/PAE and I can't get imagex.exe... link's down. and I went to that other thread someone else suggested but there's no imagex.exe download just something called get waik tools.. download please?
