Those with Athlon XP CPUs just forget it, Windows 8 won't work. Even if you manage to hack it and run it, almost everything will crash because of the lack of SSE2 instructions.
Windows 8 Consumer Preview is the last thing you can run on Athlon XP, but as I said it will crash when running Metro apps or even opening System Manager.

This has to be the most stupid feature ever included in a O.S. Why would you want to leave out millions of potencial clients? Why not put a warning that the computer doesn´t have all the security requeriments and let to the client the option to install it or not?

Actually, this has some merit as a decision, because this 'shutting out' of legacy machines will avoid some of the issues when people made the Vista jump - namely, trying to run the OS on inadequate hardware and then ranting their hearts out on various forums when the OS runs badly (if at all). That said,I think that MS should have thought of a way to bump older machines up to 8.. Unless they've already started work on a 8-based successor for Windows For Legacy PC's
    *shrugs*

if that "old" CPU can run 7 very well... it would run 8 as well. And it´s not just buying a new CPU.. it´s buying a new motherboard.. new memory....
And if we are talking about a notebook, that options it´s not even on the table.

And remember that are several companies all over the world with tens or hundreds of pc´s. Maybe on this economic crysis it´s not so simple to change 100 pc´s just because they don´t have NX/SS2.

    I absolutely agree with you.

And remember: For migrating from Windows XP to Windows 7, Microsoft has released a special version: Windows Thin PC. This version is specifically designed for low performing PCs and contains fewer components, uses less space on the hard drive and fewer services are enabled. See here (and download of free 90 day evaluation):

Any possible that someone come up a hardware addon adapter with build in NX code to overcome this restriction

hmmm, better will be to patch it and remove all components (Windows Defender, SmartScreen Filter) which use it, otherwise your PC will BSOD or hang... ://

I had old Dell 4700 that wouldn't support W8 because of NX. Got a refurb Pentium 4 640 that supports NX and x64 for $12 from OutletPC. Made change in about 15 minutes. W8 x64 runs great no problems.

Pentium 4 630 was first to my knowledge.

BTW: Does ANYBODY know some nice server, which will list SSE2, PAE, NX support (detailed specifications) according the entered model of CPU (?) (for Intel it is just enough, I don't care about AMD)... :)

I want to investigate something... :)

Actually first NX enabled iP4 were 5x0J Prescott series, while you (with 640) have more advanced Cedar Mill (both LGA 775). I was thinking to do some exchange for my legacy nbook too (just for fun, I don't use it anyway), but it has Prescott's predecessor Northwood (socket 478), so it lost cause, because LGA 775 can't be put there. :)

thanks, it is nice, because it lists very detailed specs...
...however users with legacy PCs will rather want to verify the CPU, which they don't have in their systems yet. :)

After some investigation I've figured out that in W8 there is "NO SPECIAL" SSE2_PAE_NX check. It is just NX function, which is used at Windows start. Difference is only how the exception is handled (in Windows 8 some override code is removed, so system just jumps to that error message). So if you manage to skip that "check" at start, same error will happen, if any app decides to use NX, like Windows Defender or SmartScreen Filter...

There is a cpu which support both 478 and 775 sockets and has Execute Disable Bit.

    Intel® Pentium® 4 Processor 511 (1M Cache, 2.80A GHz, 533 MHz FSB)

I would buy it but I think it won't work since in the bios I have no way to enable NX (maybe my mobo does not support it).
