Clean install of course. The latest bios was dated/released on 10/14/09.

DVD is the DELL Home Premium Upgrade. Also tried a DELL Professional DVD, the same, asks for a key after install, need to activate. Same thing for a Dell Vostro 420 purchased in mid September.

Sorry.. Saw that... The 2nd one is for x86... My Bad! The confusion was due to both the x64 and x86 are posted in the Windows 7 Ultimate, OEM (eng), x86 x64 heading...

anyways, please help me in answering my original query (Now I want to go for either windows 7 ultimate or professional... Can i use Dell Windows 7 Home Premium Upgrade DVD for the same? Please guide me to a source on how to get this done... And if this requires files to edit etc (if it is possible at all)!)

No, the Dell DVD is only for installing Home Premium. But you can download the Professional OEM or Ultimate OEM version, and activated it with "Manually install a certificate" and "Manually install a key" in the Repository as long your BIOS have SLIC 2.1

Wrong he can delete the ei.cfg file from the sources folder on the dell dvd then it's possible to install any version. all version are on the dvd but the ei.cfg file controls what chice you have.

Well I tried modifying my copy of Professional by replacing the words "Professional" with "Ultimate" in the ei.cfg file, and it didn't work. And I don't believe these Dell upgrade DVD's have any certificate on them.

C'mon guys! Let me know what will work and what won't! Or should I just play safe and download the Ultimate ISO just to be sure? I just don't want to wait to download what I already have!

    Thanks.

use Je Jin's DISM Tool look at wiminfo that will tell you how many versions are on the dvd.
Upgrade dvd don't have certificate. delete the ei.cfg ile then you can installant version you want but you wont be able to activate it because you don't have a professional key SLP OEM keys wont work, unless you have slic 2.1 in bios.

    (OP)
    - I have a 2 month OLD DELL XPS Studio 1640.
    - This will be having slic 2.1 I hope... Anyways the DELL site shows me a BIOS update... Maybe this will give me slic 2.1.
    - Anyways, if slic 2.1 is there, the Windows 7 H.Prem DVD can be used for prof/ultimate? (I have the certificate as well as the OEM keys for DELL Prof/Ultimate)

Edit: Urie, could u please enlighten me how to use the Je Jin's DISM tools for finding out the versions on the disk?

hey all--I just got this computer (SXPS 1640 w Vista HP), and I'm going to test it for SLIC 2.1 when it arrives.

I'm assuming it won't have 2.1, and I've used the search functions here for a BIOS, but all I get is some unanswered requests and a guy who bricked his machine.

I was wondering, if I go to Dell support and install the Win7 BIOS under my SXPS 1640 drivers page, would it only insert the new information, or would it overwrite the BIOS with all content, converting it to SLIC 2.1? I am totally inexperienced here, and appreciate the advice. I will go with a loader as a last resort.

    Thanks.
