If you are not willing to even trust the Security Only update, then there are no other tip than stop updating Windows i can assure no telemetry stuff in it yet BTW, Security Only update available at Download Center
Please bare with me for adding a few less important posts. But I need to get up to 20 posts so that I can then add some links to interesting things that I find and share them with you... What we need is a way to take the "Security Only Quality Update for Windows" and other INCONVENIENCE updates apart, so that we may pick the trustworthy ones out. So that we can pick the raisins and throw away the rest of the cake... I keep researching and will report the most interesting things that I find. But as concerns your remark: How do you like someone reading the book over your shoulder?
Dear telemetry deniers Maybe you can prove that there is never telemetry in the new forms of updates? And if MS wants to roll up with earlier updates we did not trust and, therefore, did not install? What then? We would like to feel sure that they will not TROLL in our data...
@allesok: I wholeheartedly recommend -NOT- trusting Microsoft, or any corporation for that matter. They are interested in selling a product. But, at some point, you have to trust someone. I trust Abbodi1406. He's been watching and working with the Windows update system for a long time. (Hint: His post count is over 6000 posts. He's answered a -lot- of questions here) And others here have checked his work. Granted, there are some people here whose replies need to be taken with a grain of salt. But there are members here whose word can be trusted. But please feel free to check their work if that's what it takes to make you feel safe.
Is the list on the original post kept up-to-date? if not where can I find some more updates to avoid? I also found this forums.pixeltailgames.com/t/windows-7-8-windows-updates-to-avoid-telemetry/9977 Thanks.
Thanks, I agree. Abbodi1406 is no doubt one of the best. But who's perfect... (Not even me... LOL) Now another aspect of this issue. When we one day have a workaround that circumvents the new INconvenience rollups that are obviously designed to make it much harder for users to update individually, independently and choose which update to trust and install, and which seems better to avoid, how can we know which one to pick? The "simplifying" procedure with these COMPLICATING rollups is obviously designed to install them all once a month. So how do we find out, which individual updates are in the bunch? So that we can then pick the ones we trust and elsewhere download only them and not the rest? Because I sincerely hope and even expect that we will some day soon have such an alternative... once someone has found out how...
The best thing to do is to search and ask questions on MDL. Chances are, we're ahead of the curve on most. And once in a while, you'll see other try to mimic our work. But always be careful. And check everything twice. There's an old addage used by craftsman: "Measure twice, cut once."
Hi would it be possible for you to provide a link to the Security Only update please or is it the one below sitting in my updates waiting to be installed [h=1]MS16-120: Description of the Security and Quality Rollup for the .NET Framework 3.5.1 for Windows 7 Service Pack 1 and Windows Server 2008 R2 Service Pack 1: October 11, 2016[/h] Your help would be much appreciated
For how long can you avoid this telemetry? In about 3 yrs W7 will be DOA and your only choice will be what M$ shoves down your throat or a *nix distro. Three years will go by very quickly
For .NET updates, it's really truely does not matter if you avoided the quality fixes, because they will be included in the next security-only update that's how CBS mechanism works
Windows 8.1 is still being supported until January 2023 after they're pulling the W7SP1 plug in 2020, that's good enough for me and let's see if Microsoft were going south by 2023 then. LOL Maybe they're gonna add something fishy to those security-only monthly updates in the future, maybe not? I'm switching from Vista SP2 to 7 SP1 by April 2017 just because of stuff like Firefox 53+ / Chrome 50+ / FFmpeg-20160714+ etc. It does take quite a bit of effort to avoid those non-security updates but that ain't too bad IMHO. Other than that, it's been great to stick with Vista for such a long time since I'm just running a few basic pieces of software myself. An older ThinkPad with a much nicer keyboard is worth it for me.
Not a big fan of IE11 (not really using it) since I don't feel like installing KB2882822 according to these sites below: www .getblackbird.net/blacklist/updates/ gist.github.com/xvitaly/eafa75ed2cb79b3bd4e9 And they just happened to drop support for IE9 on Windows 7 after January 2016, I compared ALL files for Windows 7 / Vista respectively and they looked identical to me: support.microsoft.com/en-us/kb/3124275 Is there a way to spoof Windows version (i.e. from 7 SP1 to Vista SP2) temporarily so that Cumulative IE update for Vista IE9-Windows6.0-KB3191492-x86.msu could be tricked to install on Windows 7 by any chance? Theoretically I could manually extract IE9-Windows6.0-KB3191492-x86.cab and replace all files on my own but there must be a much easier way than that. Most likely Microsoft should check more than just HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion so a simple registry hack might not work very well.
Win XP is "DOA" and that hasn't stopped me from using it for the past 2 years. No CCs stolen, no Armageddon... Because ultimately your security depends on a lot more things than just OS updates On another note is there someplace i can download the old updates? I may have to reinstall W7 soon
Hi if you go back a few pages in this topic and look at post #420 by -MysTikAL3 i think that's what you need
