Lenovo provided this regarding turning off Secure Boot.

When you are shutting down the device Press (SHIFT + SHUTDOWN from the power menu) .........

That's great John. Since a couple of us are trying to crack our G580's can you update us on the process? Did you do as the previous post directed with flas**t and then a tweaked firmware?

The flas**t's backup was flashed successfully ?
If "Yes", then upload this backup

What is "this" backup? I don't see any attachment, etc. I don't know what you are referring to with "this backup"?

    Thanks John.

A couple of us are not able to do the update as you did. When we try even with SecureBoot, etc., turned off, we get the Error 28 message despite using Flash2.

I wish we could. Isn't working.

Serg008 has suggested a different process. Which I will try once I understand which bios he is referring to with "this bios" in his direction.

So you just cloned the hard drive to the SSD and then swapped them?

Thank you for the clarification. When I write the backed up bios back with the /all -MC parameter that removes the White List? Turns it off?

    John,

I ordered and just received those disks too. Thinking though pop the SSD in an external case and use EASEUS or Mini-Partition Tool and clone the hard drive to the SSD would be faster. Would have to make sure the hdd partition is same size as the SSD but that is easy too with EASEUS or Mini-partion and both tools are free.

I'm using the HP utility and MSDOS files to make my DOS boot disk. It works fine. The steps for using it are listed here. Making the DOS boot thumb drive is not where the problem lies.

Yes the button when booting up takes me to a menu that allows me to enter the bios. Holding F2 does as well. For my G580, and several others as now the thread about it on the Lenovo forum is growing, the steps to disable Secure Boot were not spelled out and by default the option was not available to change. It was listed, could see it, could not high light it to change anything. Yesterday Lenovo support shared the Shift Shut Down thing. A couple of us found out by experimenting you can make the option live even with UEFI by activating admin password. Which sorta makes sense. You wouldn't want just anyone fiddling with Secure Boot. Once you change Secure Boot you can eliminate the password and Secure Boot stays disabled.

While it is a bit torturous to read back through the thread if you look you'll see myself and at least one other who posted about our error 28 thing.

I'm very glad yours worked. I wonder why some of the very same laptops the normal process works and for some it doesn't. I have the same version number G580, 20157.

Soon as I can I will try the flas**t process. I would like to know what I'm actually doing to the bios by using it though. None of us want to brick our laptops.

Serg008 has been a great help and resource.

No, when flashing the backup (dump) the whitelist will not disabled.

We check the ability for flashing of the modified BIOS.
If your backup(dump), made with the flas**t.exe, will flashed successfully, I will do a new mod from this dump to disable the whitelist.

    Thanks. That makes more sense.

Instead of the last backup BIOS I put on Sendfiles I'll put the backup.rom from Flas**t and we try again following the regular process.

It is odd that John's G580 same model number works and at least 2 of ours don't.

I disabled Secure Boot via the bios by assigning admin password and then could change the option to disable it. My secure boot is disabled. As was the other person who was having the same error 28.

If the thumb drive boots to DOS then it boots to DOS. The firmware flash doesn't involve the DOS boot programs.

The System files are the DOS startup files. Without those you don't boot to DOS. The System Files are DOS. The various flavors FreeDOS, etc., put the same system files required on the boot drive.

Again if it boots to DOS, you are running pure DOS.

There aren't different flavors of pure DOS.

If that is wrong and we need a particular type of "pure DOS" I'd like to know for sure.

"So you tell me, What is the difference? why did mine work and your did not?"

I don't have a clue and have asked same question.

The other person as well did the steps exactly as directed. Had same error 28's as I.

If it is the case that only certain DOS flavors will work, would not have any idea why however, it would be nice to know.

    Nit picking? Excuse me?

Do you really want to go there on this forum?

And no I'm not going to blindly try things just to see if it works just because it worked for you. Insanity is risking bricking a new laptop.

If there is a difference between the DOS formatting and kernel, I'd like to hear that from Serg. If there is none, well sir you might consider you are out of line with your nit picking baloney.

    Enjoy your sandwich John.

I have no trouble listening to people who know what they are talking about. What works for one does not necessarily work for another which is why each firmware update is for a particular machine.

But to be clear you are saying YOURS worked because you used FreeDOS, mine didn't because I didn't use FreeDOS.

We'll see how that holds up when a more experienced person sheds some light on the issue.
