Yes, took Windows 98 First edition upgrade floppy (since I had makecab ready for it), modified SETUPX for product ID 110 and replaced the "270" by "998". The Select serial would not work, had to create one with Channel 998. But... Hold on, why did 98FE prompt for a serial with Product ID 110 this time... Is SETUPX patched on original Select media so it really doesn't ask for a serial... Or maybe SETUPPP has something to do with this ? I did not change it.
I tried with en_win98_110.svf. No MSBATCH and it did not ask any serial. I'm so confused right now Haven't tried 111 (at least the English version but I expected it to have a MSBATCH file with a MSDN serial).
Yes these are the "Windows 98 Versions" CDs and DVDs I mentioned. Also, noticed some are corrupted (rotten I guess) and might fail during install (had this problem with one of them).
Not sure, if you use unmodified media, do you for good measure format disk partition each time you try a different build...
I probably did some weird mix of files or idk. I tried again, same iso, now it asks a serial. Once you type the serial, is it stored in a temporary file on the hard drive ? Might explain what happened. Sorry for all the confusion, but at least we solved that Select and MSDN Channel ID thing
I'll also have to check, what's the difference between 116 and 112 for SE, since 116 is already a FE to SE upgrade.
From my understanding (but never played around with this): 116 oem ccp is equivalent to 102 retail ccp 112 retail stepup is a ccp from Windows 98 FE to SE and/or Windows ME
Indeed, 116 requires an OEM serial (just regular OEM, but I don't think "OEM Upgrade" serials ever existed, even if we can generate them they won't work in this case). I suppose 112 requires Retail Upgrade serial, just like 102.
Is that true for FE too? (assuming you tested only FE>SE) Upgrading from Win 95 to Win 98? Since Win 95 latest is oem and Win 98 FE 102 is retail and requires upg flag in serial Will test these combos later... Like: can i stepup from FE oem to SE retail/ME and so on...and which serial type is mandatory regular/upg/with our without upg flag... Hmm...can you upgrade Win 95 with Win 98 SE 102? I guess this deserves a test too...
Have to try but as far as I remember, 104 requires at least Windows 3.1 (not sure about 3.0). Since 102 is the CD version of 104 I suppose it requires at least Windows 3.1x. Ofc you can do 95 or 98 FE to SE with 102.
Win 95c > Win 98 FE/SE 116 - SE spits out missing files, FE is cool. Only serial with BINK 0x03 w/o upg flag valid. Win 95c > Win 98 SE 112 - spits out missing files. Only serial with BINK 0x02 with upg flag valid. Win 95c > Win 98 SE 102 - SE is cool. Only serial with BINK 0x02 with upg flag valid. (never seen these before, high five... ) Spoiler Win 95c > Win ME 112 - quite easy, present a Win 98 image when asked for. Only serial with BINK 0x1C with upg flag valid. Spoiler Win 95c > Win ME 102 - is cool, no interactions needed. Only serial with BINK 0x1C with upg flag valid. Spoiler
