Hi, thanks for the thoughtful reply

This is not the MSI GE40, this is the barebone one, which has no new official bios. I can't be sure that the MSI GE40 bios is goodfor me

The MSI forum was no help.
Emailed MSI support several days ago

So, I think an unlocked barebone bios could be very helpful in this case..

So I got reply from MSI to contact the vendor. The vendor told me they will contact MSI and ask for new bios. I'm not sure it's actually going to happen in the near future or at all..

it seems like the vbios is integrated into the bios (could be?)?
also, it seems like at least one big reason for the battery problem is the Nvidia GPU not shutting down in idle state. it's set on 135/400 for core/mem. Using nvidia inspector I can get it to 100/100 on P8 state, resulting in 3-4W less.
And no - nothing is using the GPU, it's on 0%.

Can something be done about it?

What about a newer nvidia driver. The vbios is probably the onboard intel gpu. I would try the bios that matches best for your barebone. It is probably the GE40 as you mentioned.
If you don't want to risk it then wait for vendor to get back to you..
