    hello all
just wondered if anyone could help me with my problem
my samsung portable hard drive goes into standby after about 10 mins, i have to somehow access and disable this setting on the drive itself, as it does this when i plug it into my xbox to watch the media from there,
i have tried a number of fixes but nothing seems to work

does anyone know if this can even be fixed?

I have a Seagate Desktop drive that does exactly the same thing. No, you cannot disable this, in the SATA-to-USB converter, there is firmware that's programmed to shut the drive off if it is idle for more than 5 minutes. This cannot be fixed & it's normal (But I do know that it causes problems & it's irritating). The reason this is happening: Hard drives fail due to overheat. Thus, shutting the drive off will expand it's lifetime & decrease the risk of bad sectors. The only solution would be to remove the drive from the enclosure & put it in a new / 3rd party enclosure. Just make sure it doesn't overheat, Samsung Drives tend to fail easily.
