This is typical of Asus. There's a reason I avoid Asus products (aside from all the RMA's I have to do for their products). Go the chip manufacturer's websites for driver updates, since I doubt Asus will update until they feel it is absolutely necessary.
My audio card from ASUS is basically in the same state. I've been using UniXonar modded drivers for a good while now though
Even though I am responsible for digressing this thread in some other direction, I simply cannot resist replying to the above two posts. Perhaps they have not either read my post or they simply do not like ASUS. That is a personal opinion. My problem does not have to do with ASUS or ASM106/104 SATA/USB 3.0. Both of these devices worked perfectly in win 7 and win 8 and still work perfectly in 8 (my present system). Yet they become quirky and intermittently non-functional in win 8.1. So where is the problem: in the hardware or in software/drivers. That brings me to the driver part. The drivers are not available on ASUS, ASMedia, or stationdrivers. So ASUS can be hardly be blamed for not posting ASM106/104 drivers for 8.1. In fact, I would say that ASUS has to take some credit for posting at least some drivers for win 8.1 ahead of its GA. I saw x79 drivers last week on their site. Some are still missing but at least I think it is more than what Gigabyte and MSI have done with x79/win 8.1 drivers.
Run "regedit" and go to: "HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\ currentversion\policies\system", search for "EnableLUA" and change "1 to 0", restart pc. This will not shut off your metro apps, but will disable your UAC account. It is the best solution.
Hmm well I tried it and the water mark was gone and I could not open metro apps. I adjusted the UAC and still could not. So I rebooted and ..had to do a restore. Soooo I just found a UEFI bios for my Ati 7970. I found a MSI bios that they put out. Took a while to find the right one. Lol works great. One of them instead of the blue window just said MSI haha

For ASUS X501U, there's a file inside the bios setting (i think in Security tab) that u can install to remove the watermark. No need to install kb from M$.
