There are some things I don't understand about SLIC activation I wish someone would explain to me: 1) Why doesn't Microsoft blacklist public keys that work with SLIC activation? 2) Why is it that when I enter *legitimate* keys (Like that found on a computer for Windows 7), it refuses to activate online, but it does activate over the phone?
1. It would affect all users of that key (I refer to validation, not activation*). True OEM:SLP keys are generic and shared (like gVLKs for KMS). The activation with an OEM:SLP key is completely offline and MS is not involved. 2. The keys from the COA are not OEM:SLP keys, but OEM:COA or OEM:NSLP ones. Since these keys are often nabbed (PCs for sale in stores or the like) they are usually blocked from online activation. After the first phone activation they work as usual. MDL is only interested in the generic true OEM:SLP keys. *There is one blocked OEM:SLP, the blacklisted Lenovo one. It leaked before distribution of machines started, thus blocking didn't affect legal users. No genuine Lenovo machine with that key exists. As I wrote above you CAN activate even with this key but validation will get ya.

Does it mean they if I choose an key from HP, my certificate (SLIC as well?) needs to come from HP as well? If yes to the above question, what's the use of keys with unknown OEM? Also how do I know which xrm-ms to use? There's a xrm-ms collection in zip file provided somewhere here and as an example, there are several xrm-ms files from HP. Which one should I use. Thanks a lot
1 - Yes. But the BIOS SLIC has to match. Three items, like a puzzle. 2 - Won't work. Unless unused. Even then, keys may are assigned to machine Ser# and may have been deactivated, like when attached to a Refurb. 3 - The one that works?
