looks like as if it is only USB 2.0 driver installed instead of USB 3.0

I was hoping you wouldn't catch me! :tea:

Now, back to my problem. What is it with Windows 8.1 that is diff. than Windows 8 for me to have this issue? :crystal:

Gonna try this method now to force the installation of the USB 3.0 Extensive Driver:

nope, didn't work, installing the USB 3.0 Extensible driver of Windows 7 still tells me not compatible.

But what I did was, install the Intel Chipset Drivers but WITHOUT the -Overide command, just used the -overall command and the speed went up from 10 MB/S to 80 MB/S

    not bad

Time for a format to see if I can squeeze in more performance because the last time I installed the Intel Chipset Drivers I did it with the -overide command

Have you tried Windows 8.1 out of the box without any superfluous driver installs? As I've pointed out again and again, Intel's INF update package is not a chipset driver package, but is a package of INFs (how shocking that an INF package contains only INFs!).

The INF package does three things:

    1) For any device that just has a generic name in the Windows device manager, give it a proper name with proper Intel branding. Recent versions of Windows (8 and newer) already contain updated INFs with all the proper branding and specific model numbers. This is a purely cosmetic effect.

    2) For any Intel motherboard device that Windows does not recognize but that Windows has a generic driver for, tell Windows to use that generic driver (only applicable if your hardware is substantially newer than your Windows version, like if you're installing XP on a modern computer).

    3) For any Intel motherboard device that Windows does not recognize and Windows does not have a generic driver for, "install" an "empty" driver for it so that the device manager will no longer mark the device as unrecognized and present you with that yellow exclamation mark. This is what it does with the MEI, and can cause problems for things that actually need the MEI.

Now, the INF package should be smart enough to basically do nothing if none of those three cases apply (and in the case of Windows 8.1, where it already has all the latest INFs and where any mobo hardware on the market right now is already recognized, this is exactly what it should do: nothing... well, except for the MEI, but Windows Update will grab a real MEI driver automatically if you turned the auto-install driver feature on). But if you go around running that INF with various overriding switches that should not be used unless there is a specific problem that needs to be solved, it's possible that this messed something up (pointing Windows to use the wrong generic driver, e.g.).

Also, someone mentioned Asus USB drivers on the first page. Those are just Asus' quick-charge thing (where it boosts the USB port's power beyond spec to charge things quicker--I personally don't like hackish things like that and personally avoid them) and should not be related to any of this.

Anyway, as an owner of an Ivy Bridge Asus laptop with USB3 and Windows 8.1, I can say that I have no problems with USB3 performance. So what are you doing wrong? Go nuke your computer. Install Windows 8.1 clean. Don't muck around with drivers that you don't need (and certainly do NOT try to force-install Windows 7 USB drivers!), and see if that works. I have a feeling that it will.

thanks a lot for this great post

    1) I did try the USB transfer speed out of the box. Same, slower than Windows 8 and Windows 7

    2) I already told the guy that suggested the ASUS USB Charger that is not a driver and does what you mentioned

    3) now I have a very clear understanding of what the Intel Chipset Software does and thank you

    4) why do all laptop manufacturers include those drivers then? example, check your ASUS drivers CD if you got one or at least saved the drivers folder, the auto installer starts out by installing the intel chipset drivers, then rebooting, then IRST, etc.

    5) I have learned my lesson the hard way to never install any driver from Windows update and thus, I prefer installing the Intel Management Engine Components (MEI) from the ASUS driver page of my laptop

    6) cheers man

The problem with your item 5) is that ASUS eventually will stop posting updates to your system. I don't know how long they provide support for a new system but it is something like one year. Then even though Intel or RealTek or other 3rd party hardware provider continues to update their drivers, ASUS stops posting the newer version when their time limit expires.

I've always used ASUS and I've had good performance with them. When the ASUS support stops, I search for the updated drivers on the 3rd party sites. Occasionally, Windows Update will want to install something hardware related and I usually allow them to do that.

I can understand your pursuit of the ultimate performance. I just received a new ASUS motherboard this afternoon. The new case, however, is on a UPS truck that had an accident a few hundred miles away. It was supposed to be delivered along with the motherboard and now I have no idea what happened to the box. In any case, I can't start building the new system without a case. And so it goes.

    Good luck with your system.

what I do is, once they stop support for my current laptop, I get the drivers from the next new gen laptop, that way I am at least sure those drivers are meant for laptops and usually ASUS uses similar hardware across their laptops (example, Atheros WLAN for the Wireless, etc.)

If the Olympics ever has an event for who has jumped between Windows 7 & 8 the most times, pretty sure ian82 will be going home with the gold.
