Frankly I don't mind to buy and install an huge RAM amount just to manage a dism image once a while, so yes an interesting corner case, but still a corner case.
@cengizhan is talking about ImDisk capabilities vs Softperfect RAMdisk, not about RAM size. BUT again yes, a huge amount of RAM is needed for some dism tasks.
Indedd I was talking that rather than buying another 8/16GB just to have a RAMdisk large enough to use dism once or twice a month, I would spend that money in a faster/better/larger SSD. I have 16 GB on my home server, but my ramdisk there is still set to 1GB max, the other RAM is needed to run VMs which is something way more frequent of DISM scenarios, unless you are MSMG or Abbodi in person
i have 16gb ram. i bought them when they were cheap. 12gb is enough to update any windows 7/8.1/10 image offline. and it is very fast with it. i also set my temp dir in ramdisk during this operation. and i remove the ramdisk after this. i would prefer imdisk if the emulation was proper. but the autohor of it said that his program lacks this feature.
Yeah... I used to make custom AIOs that requires a lot of RAM when doing dism stuff such as exporting wim to esd. LOT of RAM needed.
Never had any doubts about that Browsers' caches that's bread and butter of RAMdisks, because the speed and because the wearing (although the latter problem is greatly exaggerated on forums). Only the good old Opera 12 had a setting to use the ram as cache w/o external programs, and was a really great thing. So, given you have a lot of RAM why not use both Soferfect and imdisk? Use the former to create a large RAMdisk temporarily to use DISM, use the latter for caching and temp purposes, set the chache there and forget about it. Looks like a great solution to me.
Is it wise to create a ram disk if I have 8gb ram for windows temp files? If yes how much 1Gb or 2Gb? Thnx in advance.
1 GB should be more than enough but given you can set imdisk as dynamic if you set it to say 3GB, and you have 200MB of caches / temp, your ramdisk will take just little more than 200MB not 3GB
128gb of ram on my other PC. Everything from the swap file to my browser cache is all on ram. If ram had a memory that kept past a reboot, I would install my OS there too.
Oh..So in general If I set the 1GB disk as dynamic then the remaining >500MB minus the cache will be freed to OS and only used when needed right?
