I can't but recognize your frustration level because I've also been feeling that for years. What ARE they doing?!?
so what are you guys using hyper-v for? testing beta os's? i just use virtualbox to test a new windows build and then stip out all the crap when the os is installed to see what breaks, before i upgrade for real. i used to use ntlite but found some things it allowed you to remove broke some critical components so i do removals myself. got quite good at it, my personal hobby project p10to7 debloates windows 10 th1 through to rs5, still gotta update it for newer builds but it's been very handy for quick reinstalls / setup of all my softwares. what used to take me a day only takes 30 minutes. (no more installers, everything installed by batch files and reg files) all from an autoplay gui.
yea i use hyper-v to install the os mount the vhd use the new feature of ntlite to lite the vhd check it capture back to wim all is quite fast too rn im on server 2016 and barely can go outside of it any windows i tried till server 2022 or win11 is kinda buggy imo , not finalized well, no final optimization it just ok u found a bug, upgrade to newer version and that bug will get fixed and so on and on...
With HV you can launch the same VHDX inside Hyper-V or natively (on real HW). You can also use it with vmware. VBOX doesn't understand VHDXs disks, just VHDs, which is a way less resilient format. VHDX are also easily shrinkable VHD needs to be converted to do so. Both HV and VMWare can easily manage the startup/shutdown/save/restore options of VMs on host shudown/reboot (and Parallels can do that as well). VBX needs a third party app to have a similar feature (vboxvmservice/phpvirtualbox/hyperbox...) Until april 2021 remote fx allows to remote the 3D/Multimedia functionality of the VM to any supported RDP client including XP, Linux and android). With HV you can move a VMs across HDDs and different hosts with the VM still up and running... and so on. VBX has its own pros, but all in all, in a three player competition will get the bronze medal. A a what I use HV for. I use all three virtualization products depending the situation. But surely HV's bread and butter is running automatically a machine in background (I use it for the domain controller, for example). Playing a 3dgame that resides on my relatively powered server with a 13 year old notebook is also a nice thing to do.
Even if you try something like taskbar.dll from 21362 or 21376, you won't get a start button on the taskbar. If you try the one from 21390, explorer will be in a constant crash loop (same applies for the one from 21996 as far as I remember).
I'm installing 22000.71 right as we speak to test out that reg hack I sent a few minutes ago and swapping taskbar.dll.
well I think that still won't help with the constant crash loop of explorer with taskbar.dll from 21996.
Why you should replace it? Just use explorer 2022 or AMM or both. AMM,other than being indispensable for other things, has the advantage that any 3rd part program has in such situations, given is not going to be replaced on each CU
What's the point in using explorer from server 2022 when you can just swap one single dll and keep everything else? After all, you want the old taskbar on Windows 11, and you get it. Surely you don't get the new explorer if you use the one from server 2022.
