ITHAKA (www . ithaca . org . au/gallery/1-cavafy-video/detail/1105-ithaca-by-cpcavafy-with-sean-connery-a-vangelis?tmpl=component) "As you set out for Ithaka hope the voyage is a long one, full of adventure, full of discovery. Laistrygonians and Cyclops, angry Poseidon—don’t be afraid of them: you’ll never find things like that on your way as long as you keep your thoughts raised high, as long as a rare excitement stirs your spirit and your body. Laistrygonians and Cyclops, wild Poseidon—you won’t encounter them unless you bring them along inside your soul, unless your soul sets them up in front of you. Hope the voyage is a long one. May there be many a summer morning when, with what pleasure, what joy, you come into harbors seen for the first time; may you stop at Phoenician trading stations to buy fine things, mother of pearl and coral, amber and ebony, sensual perfume of every kind— as many sensual perfumes as you can; and may you visit many Egyptian cities to gather stores of knowledge from their scholars. Keep Ithaka always in your mind. Arriving there is what you are destined for. But do not hurry the journey at all. Better if it lasts for years, so you are old by the time you reach the island, wealthy with all you have gained on the way, not expecting Ithaka to make you rich. Ithaka gave you the marvelous journey. Without her you would not have set out. She has nothing left to give you now. And if you find her poor, Ithaka won’t have fooled you. Wise as you will have become, so full of experience, you will have understood by then what these Ithakas mean." C.P.Cavafy - Ithaka (www . cavafy . com) (translated from Greek by Edmund Keeley and Philip Sherrard) If anything is all Greek to you... probably I can translate it! Hey all from Cyprus! (en . wikipedia . org/wiki/Cyprus) PS: Sorry for the links cluttering. I'm too green for the forum to allow proper linking)
okay, i know the first 26 lines of the odyssee by heart, for what that is worth, but do me a favor, cakcy, please explain what you intend to tell us in the introduction thread? it is a very unusual way to introduce yourself, imho...welcome here, btw..
Thank you for your welcoming! If you are not Greek your knowledge of the first 26 lines of of Odyssey is impressive! The Ithaka poem that I thought of including in my introduction (bad idea?) was my way of describing the "journey" I expect to have in this forum. The last lines of the poem: "Ithaka gave you the marvelous journey. Without her you would not have set out. She has nothing left to give you now. And if you find her poor, Ithaka won’t have fooled you. Wise as you will have become, so full of experience, you will have understood by then what these Ithakas mean." are my approach to how a "journey" should be assessed. Even if the destination (Ithaka) does not fulfill one's expectations, what matters at the end of the day is the experience gained while getting there. That's what I hope to get from this "journey" (MDL). My apologies if my way of introducing myself have offended/bothered anyone. I can always edit the post to achieve a more ... blend-in result!
Thank you! I did make a nice thank you image just to discover that I can't post it in a decent size because I need 20 posts to be able to do that. So, please have it as an attachment until I'm.... old enough!
In my opinion, not a bad idea at all; I think a very original idea. - No need to achieve a more ...blend-in result, lol. ...and enjoy your stay!
Thank you! To be honest... I was kind of worried that I violated some code of conduct that I failed to read! Thank you for the thumbs-up!
