thanx a lot everyone for all your help. I will try to check if its a ram thing otherwise I will buy a new 600watt psu.
I didnt make that test. The magazine made it, and im sure they only use new parts to get accurate results. (And they use a consumption meter so its not just an estimate. Its what the rig de-facto pulls from the wall socket.) But even from my own experience i can confirm that such a card really doesnt need too much juice. Because before i bought my GTX i had a 9800GT myself, (which is a re-branded 8800GT), powered by a 4 year old 350W PSU where the cap-aging factor certainly wasnt neglectable anymore. Still i never had any problems benchmarking, stresstesting or gaming, which means that power consumption must have been moderate at best or it most definitely would have brought that aged 350W PSU to its knees...
^^ Yeah I do see a lot of people who over do it with power supplies. Thinking they need a 1000w for an SLI setup and an overclocked quad. But I can see how people get sucked in to that mentality since "More is better" and most consumers don't really research quality power supplies or don't know since its their first build.. Get a high efficient 500-600 watt Corsair, Antec EarthWatts, or OCZ Z series and it will last longer and power more hardware than a s**t hole 1000 watt from the back streets of Taiwan.
i had that problem years ago when i used to have a 400Watts PSU while using XP Pro and lots of other hardware. Trust me when i say this, things over time over heats, specially when you leave the computer on for couple of days. With a new PSU my computer ran flawlessly. I builded a different one which is what im using now with a new PSU too and it came down to a DOA Ram, just take a look at those 2 things.
I have an OCZ 600w psu, and it's insufficient for my rig (see above). Mind that I removed 1 internal drive (500gb), 1 external 2.5" drive that pulls power from usb, and 2 pci cards (gigabit lan + creative extigy sb) too resolve the cold boot issue. EDIT : gonna need at least a 700w psu, a quality OCZ or Antec one, that is.
Yeah, but having 5 internal and 2 external drives plugged in, an oc'ed cpu 4gb oc'ed mem, an antec 900 case with 4 120mm and one 300mm fan, let alone all other devices and pci cards i use, that would never do it. My 600w ocz doesn't even cut it. Gonna need a 700w psu, so there are exeptions. Off course, a 1000w psu is pure madness, that's correct. Got to have about 10 drives, mega graphics in sli, a 200w eating cpu (lol), and about 15 pci cards and a beast of a watercooling system and 20 fans, and you'd still have some reserves. So yes, 1000 is just a waste of power. Don't know anyone that has that much in his pc
Is there a way to detect if a PSU is failing? So that you know it is indeed a PSU problem before you go and buy another one.
Try a psu from a friend or so. OR eliminate stuff, like pci cards and drives that u can miss for now. If the issue is gone, you know it's the psu.
Since you were quoting me: 1) I think you missed the point of the PSU Calculator 2) I have no 400W PSU 3) What has that got to do with the point i was making? Sorry, but im not quite sure what youre trying to say...
@Tripranav I had a similar problem, some years ago. My PC run fine when it was HOT, and took several failed boots, to warm up, and work ok. I was caused by a memory stick not properly inserted in the slot. (when the compuer warmed up, it worked fine) Try reinserting your memory sticks
@phazor I calculated my power usage on the link you gave, and here are the results. Its showing 268 watts and I am using a 400 watt psu. So do I need to change the psu or not?
