@potjevleesch asked for our opinions about working AV on 10074, and as usual he got answers like "stick to Defender", "common sense", "no need of any third party AV". I do know that on this matter tastes differ. But I've been using Avira free for the last couple of years and I'm surely happy with it as to detections, false positives, customization, use of resources. Plus it seems to be working pretty well on recent Win 10 builds. Updated just yesterday to version 15.0.10.434.
HI Blueingreen just tried this Avira yesterday: works like a charm but add 30 seconds to boot and slows shutdown as well due to to a lotta progs which can't stop in the the process... never happened wth defender alone.
Because some people choose not to trust MS so blindly as it seems some do. I just use MalwareBytes on the familys PC, but we try to have some common sense about the sites we visit and what we download. It's pretty well known that if you frequent porn sites or other less than reputable sites you're likely to contract a virus or some malware/spyware. Browsing habits have a lot to do with how safe you are online. Also using a more safety conscious browser like Firefox helps with add-ons like AdBlock, self-destructing cookies and HTTPS-Everywhere. That's my setup anyway and I haven't had any problems for a very long time. *Like Blueingreen states below, if you do install a third party anti-virus you should disable Defender. This will speed things up some for you.
Sorry to hear that. While a slight slow boot is a known behavior (in fact, for a few secs until the umbrella gets opened, your system may be less reponsive), I never faced such shutdown issues, even on low profile machines. When you say "never happened with Defender alone", you mean that Avira and Defender are running alongside each other? I deactivate Defender via gpedit. I like maintenance and manual updates: that's why Defender is not my favorite tool.
It's all right to choose your own protection off course It is that I have trust In myself with surfing the internet and not to get infected by a virus or malware so Protection for me must be low that's the way I like it
Norton Security 2015 beta does not have these drawbacks. I use what's between my ears when surfing, downloading etc. but I do think I can be be outwitted by some sophisticated worm, virus, or whatever, even with W10 TP, this is why I opened this thread. BTW I tested Defender by willingly downloading infected software, had no reaction from Defender.
No-Script is a very good idea as well. Good call M0rriss0n. I just don't worry about that as much since my personal OS of choice is Linux, and I practice safe browsing. I have one Windows 7 PC that stays connected to the internet but 2 others that are air gapped, and when I'm testing Windows 10 it is sandboxed and air gapped.
thank you all, but you are mostly out of tune, the question is not "are AV useful... necessary" etc. and - no, defender is not "clever" enough - you need an efficient AV to thwart sohphisticated malware, which defender can't - no, all AV don't slow systems: Norton Security don't, F-Secure don't, Bitdefender don't, Webroot don't (personal experience) this is why th question is still pending...
