Although i use a very smart Powershell Module to check WU after Patch Day and write findings to a list and to update Win 8.1 in Audit Mode, i never tested it with activated option for Office Updates. It gathers the download links from WU for full MSU files so far. Those can be used for online install and offline integration .
Still slightly clueless how to handle Office 15 correctly. Not sure about the differences between WU offer and WHD downloads . Installing itself is not the issue, but proper determination of needed updates is miracle to me atm. Reminds me of the sophisticated solution by burfadel .
WU offers updates in .cab format & when we download that manually then format is msu & exe... Exactly what is bothering you???
As abbodi already stated there is some difference between the Hotfixes or Updates the tools offer ... better i let him speak: For that reason it's afaik recommended to use either or. Satisfying WU (especially the last months) is kinda bitchy-glitchy, to say it as politely as possible.
As you may notice, office updates are unique by the component/product name, and they are cumulative the only difference between WU and WHD is hotfixes but unlike windows updates, office's hotfixes do correctly suppress published updates, so no need for satisfying yes, handling office updates will be tricky

Little public poll While working with hypedave on a 'little' solution, i realised it might be a good idea to integrate here . New feature would offer to integrate updates to a mounted WIM (apparently it would mount it directly) from either a specific list or by offering a folder (script would only check if updates aren't already integrated before it starts). Advantages of the used for-loop for the Integration would be: updates will be integrated in the order given in the TXT list (so you can sort updates by nessessities of integration process) murphy noticed, if you integrate this way, every update uses it's own dism command, so no need to exclude updates that need to be integrated alone normally What do YOU think, is it useful or not ?

Great little tool. Only suggestion so far, to make it more elegant, is to change the downpath to %cd%\hotfixes So you have neat organized folders. In the future if you could identify OS and architecture (if you are planning going beyond w8),so you could have a folder tree like hotfixes\ ----------\vista_x86 ----------\w7_x86 ----------\w7_x64 ----------\w8_x86 ----------\w81_x64 So you can still download and place each downloaded update in the correct folder. Note: so far the tool assumes all updates being in a folder with sub-folders. It queries all the subfolders (recurse) and compares with Windows Update Offer, then installs only the needed. Rest is optional. To download and organise the Updates most use WHD, so there is no need for just another tool. This tool closes a gap between WHD and Windows Update since it allows installing already downloaded updates after deciding which are needed for the current system.
