Anyone able to hook me up with Symantec_Ghost_Solution_Suite_3_3_RU8.exe and Symantec_Ghost_Standard_Tools_3_3_RU8.msi please?
I remember Ghost was the old gold standard. How is this all compared to say - Acronis & Paragon now? I've only used these 2 for years since I lost touch with Ghost.
Ghost is a single executable that gets the job done and is very reliable. Real easy... Choose to work with whatever you like.
Nice. It seems you are upset over a sincere curiosity. I've lost touch with good ole Norton Ghost and hence I asked.
I think a lot of people get confused and don't know that back in 2003, Symantec bought up PowerQuest and in 2004 they released a new "Consumer Edition" of Ghost called "Norton Ghost 9.0". This was NOT based on the original Ghost code-base, but instead it was based on the PowerQuest Drive Image 7 code-base. Consequently, the classic Ghost code-base was branched off into a "Corporate Edition" of Ghost called "Ghost Solution Suite 1.0". From that point on, they have remained two separate products. As of right now the two latest releases are... Norton Ghost 15.0 (Consumer Edition that's based on PowerQuest Drive Image code-base.) Ghost Solution Suite 3.3 (Corporate Edition that's based on classic "Ghost" code-base.) So IMO, the "classic" edition of Ghost has always worked great! I love that it's a lightweight single executable that can be ran from WinPE and it gets the job done. IMO, the "Norton Ghost" consumer edition of Ghost is trash! I wished they would have changed the name to something else since keeping the name "Ghost" was very misleading to a lot of users. I have tried Acronis and Paragon and IMO, they are bloated and unintuitive. The only other Backup/Recovery software that I keep in my arsenal is Macrium Reflect. Between 2008-2014, Ghost was never updated to work with UEFI partitions so sometime in 2012-2013 I had started using Macrium Reflect to workaround this issue. There isn't a single executable like with Ghost, but I just grab the main program files from the "Rescue Media" and am able to run it standalone in WinPE. The only negative thing I don't like about Macrium Reflect is that it isn't "scriptable" like Ghost is. So in 2015 when Symantec finally released Ghost Solution Suite 3.0, I switched back and have been using Ghost ever since. Although I do still keep Macrium Reflect around in my arsenal. So if you plan on testing the waters with Ghost again, just be sure you're using a build from the "Ghost Solution Suite" releases, NOT the "Norton Ghost" releases. The latest available as of right now is Ghost Solution Suite 3.3 RU8 which includes Ghost64.exe v12.0.0.11379.
Thanks for that well summarized but detailed insight. Its literally Mini Wiki worthy set of insights. I totally forgot PQ Partition Magic. Used it long back too. I guess its time to now seek out the GSS you suggested - The above shared links are broken - Can you share please? Would love it on a PE as well .. maybe one of them already has it - the russian one. Ive gotten so bad with remembering names.
