Guys, maybe you didn't catch main purpose of this tool. This is not only about merging install.wim as this is easy, this solution brings you fully merging both ISOs - you are able to run upgrade from currently installed Windows. You can boot into both environments to enter Recovery mode. Thats why here must be patching setup.exe and autorun.dll and new setup.cmd that can handle everyting. Let me know if it's not clear in first post
Not sure exactly what is being talked about, but there were a few major problems with my super-aio builds. First I removed all of the upgrade files because you can't use an upgrade process for a build that isn't designed for it. That's files and one of the boot.wim images. Second, it was just impossible to use esd or solid wim format. There is a fundamental error in the way the files are processed that creates errors on larger files. Third, the dism process itself breaks down on a huge AIO. Even using my diskpart-setup script, it would be very slow. And this was on mostly unmodified images. I think I only inserted a service pack in server 2008 or something. IIRC I tried removing a few images and it was still buggy and laggy. I just gave up because there wasn't really any advantage of trying to use the official MS process to make an AIO that was so large. It may be possible to use wimlib or something else to handle the actual applications of the images in a way that isn't buggy. That was never the point of my images. I always wanted to use MS's own tools in the most official way possible with no custom modifications. Until there is a fundamental re-tool of the dism process, something like the SuperAIO I was attempting is just not viable.

Yeah it probably works a lot better if most of the files are not re-archived. When the wim is created, it analyses each file and if it's the same as a file in another image, it will just add a pointer to the other image rather than add the same file again. I forget exactly how large my SuperAIO was, but it was massive.
You made one ISO with install.swm files (Over 32GB) and one with install.esd (approx. 22GB) for each release, iirc. It actually is a bit of nonsense to create these AiOs for practical use because when you're finished there will already be new updates released and i hardly ever install 7 or 8.1 these days, x86 even less
I think the next one I was working on was about twice as big. The install.esd just didn't work at all. I tried like 10 times to export and re-export the indexes. There is some kind of internal limitations that the current dism is not equipped to handle. As far as upgrades, the problem is that part of the process is to deal with program compatibilities. I haven't tested all this, but I imagine using win10 files to upgrade a win7 system to win8 might have issues.
I want to in-place upgrade not just for moving to a higher edition but for reinstalling same edition without reformat disk and install from scratch, right?

I was always able to export the images fine. It's when I ran setup that they failed and caused errors. The further down the index list, the more errors they had.
LOL, if that works it should give a clear indication of a fixed dism process. I think my install.esd was ~32gb.
Still have a few of the older "baseline" and "xx in 1" ones. Win7, Win8, early Win10. These days, I simply create my own ones using the great scripts from @abbodi1406 and @Enthousiast.
Is there a way to make the ESD support work for windows 7 without having to do the AIO? since good I need a windows 7 with ESD support but only a single edition @George King
